Chapter 10 - The Dawn

Two years later.
The morning sun washed over the harbor in Harbor Cove, Maine, turning the calm surface of the Atlantic into a sparkling carpet of liquid gold.
On the wooden deck of the white clapboard farmhouse, a two-year-old boy with wild, dark curls and bright brown eyes was chasing a yellow butterfly, his high, joyous laughter ringing out across the morning air.
"Julian! Don't go too close to the garden gate!" Jenna called out from the kitchen doorway, holding two plates of fresh blueberry pancakes.
"I catch it, Auntie!" Julian squealed, his tiny shoes pattering happily across the cedar deck.
Claire walked out onto the deck, wearing a white linen shirt and rolled-up trousers, carrying a cup of hot coffee.
She leaned against the wooden railing, taking a deep breath of the fresh, salty air.
The house was paid for. Her name was legally restored to Claire Vance. Her design business was thriving online, operating through a clean, quiet corporation that had zero ties to New York or Miami.
She watched her son collapse into a heap of giggles as the butterfly fluttered up over the wooden fence into the wild rosebushes.
Julian sat up, wiped his dirty hands on his denim overalls, and looked up at his mother, his face radiant with pure, unburdened joy.
"Mommy! Look! I flew!" he cheered, raising his small arms into the warm air.

Claire laughed—a light, free, beautiful sound that echoed across the quiet harbor. She walked across the deck, knelt down in the warm grass, and pulled her son into a tight, loving embrace, resting her cheek against his soft, dark hair.
The cage was gone. The shadows had receded. And under the bright, endless sky of a new morning, Claire Moreland had finally found her home.
