Chapter 3 - The Ghost Network

By 8:00 AM the following morning, the sun rose over a misty Manhattan skyline, casting a pale gold light over the corner office of Reed, Vance & Associates on the forty-fifth floor of a midtown skyscraper.

Malcolm Reed stood by his window, holding a bone china cup of dark roast coffee.

At sixty-two, Malcolm looked like an elder statesman—tailored tweed suit, silver hair trimmed to perfection, and eyes that had watched three generations of New York power brokers attempt to tear each other apart.

The heavy oak door to his office opened, and his secretary stepped in, looking visibly unnerved.

"Mr. Reed... Mr. Moreland is here. He didn't make an appointment."

Before Malcolm could answer, the door was pushed open completely.

Damian Moreland walked into the office. He was accompanied by two heavy-set men in dark suits who remained stationed in the outer hallway, their hands folded low over their belts. Damian looked as though he hadn't slept a minute—his tie was slightly loosened, his eyes rimmed with red, but his posture was as dangerous as a coiled viper.

"Malcolm," Damian said, stepping toward the large desk. "Where is she?"

Malcolm didn't flinch. He didn't even set his coffee cup down. He merely looked at Damian over the rim of his glasses with cold, professional detachment.

"Good morning, Damian," Malcolm said smoothly. "If you are referring to your wife, Mrs. Claire Moreland, I suggest you take a seat."

"I am not sitting down," Damian growled, leaning both hands heavy on the polished mahogany desk. "She took my child, Malcolm. She disappeared from my estate in the middle of the night. If you had a hand in hiding her, I will tear this firm apart board by board."

Malcolm set his cup down with a light clack on its saucer. He reached into his leather briefcase, pulled out a thick blue folder, and slid it across the desk toward Damian.

"Claire is no longer inside your reach, Damian," Malcolm said calmly. "And if you attempt to use your usual... aggressive tactics... against this office or any entity associated with her, you will find yourself dealing with the United States District Court for the Southern District of New York before sunset."

Damian glanced down at the folder but didn't open it. "What is this?"

"That is a petition for absolute divorce on the grounds of marital misconduct, irretrievable breakdown, and emotional cruelty," Malcolm stated flatly. "Along with an emergency ex-parte motion for sole legal and physical custody of Julian Damian Moreland."

Hearing his son’s name uttered aloud by an attorney sent a surge of hot blood into Damian’s temples. "She had the baby?"

"She did," Malcolm replied. "A healthy boy. Delivered safely without the assistance of your armed guards or your private doctors."

Damian grabbed the folder, his fingers crumpling the thick blue paper. "Where is he? Where are they?"

"They are in a location that you will never find," Malcolm said. "Claire spent eight months preparing for this eventuality, Damian. She didn't just walk out the door. She systematically severed every digital, financial, and physical link connecting her life to yours."

Malcolm leaned forward, resting his forearms on the desk. "Every asset she owned prior to your marriage has been transferred to an irrevocable offshore trust controlled by an independent trustee. Her cell phone, her vehicle leases, her personal bank accounts—all closed. She does not exist on any network you own or control. You cannot track her through her credit cards, because she isn't using them. You cannot track her through her family, because Jenna has also taken a leave of absence from her firm and left the state."

Damian let out a harsh, bitter laugh. "You think a few shell companies and legal walls can hide someone from me? I run this city, Malcolm! I have eyes in every airport, every harbor, every police precinct!"

"And Claire knows every single one of those eyes because she sat at your dinner table for seven years while you bragged about them," Malcolm countered razor-sharp. "She knows your lieutenants by name. She knows your surveillance protocols. She built her escape route specifically around your blind spots."

Damian leaned closer, his voice dropping into a lethal whisper. "Tell me where my son is, Malcolm. Or I swear to God, you won't walk out of this building tonight."

Malcolm didn't blink. He reached down and clicked a button on his desk intercom.

"Sharon," Malcolm said clearly. "Please inform the Special Agent in Charge at the FBI’s Organized Crime Task Force that Mr. Moreland is currently in my office making direct physical threats."

The intercom hummed. "Yes, Mr. Reed. Agent Miller is on line two."

Damian froze.

Malcolm looked up at him, his face utterly unreadable. "You are powerful, Damian. But you are currently under three separate federal grand jury investigations regarding your real estate holdings in Florida. If you drop one foot out of line, if a single one of your soldiers approaches Claire or her legal team, I will turn over six years of personal financial disclosures that Claire retained during your marriage. Disclosures that detail exactly how Sabrina Cole’s consulting firms were used to launder twelve million dollars through your Miami properties."

May you like

Damian’s chest went perfectly still. His eyes narrowed into slits. "She took my financial records?"

"She took everything she needed to ensure you leave her and her son alone," Malcolm said quietly. "Now, take those papers and get out of my office."
