Chapter 9 - The Final Settlement

Six months later, the summer heat had returned to New York City.

On the front page of the New York Times, a bold headline read:

DAMIAN MORELAND SENTENCED TO TWENTY YEARS IN FEDERAL PENITENTIARY FOLLOWING HISTORIC RACKETEERING CONVICTION

Inside the Federal Courthouse in Lower Manhattan, the gallery was packed with reporters, lawyers, and federal agents.

Damian Moreland stood before the judge’s bench wearing a bright orange prison jumpsuit, heavy steel cuffs locking his wrists to a waist chain. His hair was cut short, silver threads now dominant at his temples, his face thin but calm.

Beside him, his legal counsel stood in silence as the judge pronounced the sentence.

When asked if he had any final statement before he was remanded into custody, Damian turned slowly to look at the courtroom.

He didn't look at the reporters. He didn't look at the federal prosecutors who had spent five years bringing him down. He looked toward the back row of the gallery.

There, sitting quietly beside Malcolm Reed, was Claire.

She was dressed in a dark olive silk dress, her hair elegant and simple, her face serene.

Damian looked at her for three long seconds. He didn't smile. He didn't speak. He simply bowed his head slightly—a silent gesture of absolute surrender, recognition, and respect.

He turned back to the judge. "No statement, Your Honor."

Two federal marshals led Damian through the heavy side door toward the holding cells below, the heavy steel door closing behind him with a final, echoing CLACK.

Malcolm Reed turned to Claire, handing her a blue leather folder.

"It’s done, Claire," Malcolm said softly. "Damian signed the final custody agreements and the global financial settlement in his cell this morning. He relinquished all parental rights, transferred all legitimate real estate holdings into an unassailable trust for Julian, and agreed never to contact you or seek your location upon his eventual release."

Claire took the folder, holding it against her chest. "Did he ask for anything?"

Malcolm looked at her over his glasses. "He asked for one picture of Julian every year on his birthday. Delivered through my office. No return address."

Claire looked down at the folder in her hands, feeling the cool leather under her fingers.

"He can have the picture," she said softly.
