Chapter 2 - The Vanishing

The birth of Julian Damian Moreland occurred at 3:14 AM in a private, unlisted maternity suite at a small community hospital forty miles north of the Moreland estate.

There were no armed mobsters in dark suits standing guard outside the door. There were no private physicians reporting every contraction to a central command center. There was only Claire, her sister Jenna, a soft-spoken nurse named Sarah, and an elderly obstetrician who didn't know or care that the woman pushing on his delivery table was married to the most feared organized crime boss in the Tri-State area.

When the baby cleared her body, his tiny, furious cries filled the quiet room.

Claire collapsed back against the white pillows, her body trembling with exhaustion, tears finally spilling down her cheeks as the nurse laid the warm, wet bundle against her bare chest.

"He’s perfect, Claire," Jenna whispered, leaning over the bed, her own voice cracking with emotion. "Eight pounds, two ounces. He has your eyes."

Claire brushed her fingers over the baby's damp, dark hair. "He has his own life," she murmured fiercely. "That’s all he has."

At that exact moment, thirty miles away, a black Mercedes Maybach pulled up to the main security gates of the Moreland estate in Connecticut.

Damian Moreland stepped out of the rear seat before the vehicle had completely stopped. He looked immaculate—a custom dark grey Brioni suit, crisp white shirt, his silver-flecked dark hair combed back neatly. But beneath his polished exterior, an uncomfortable knot of anxiety had been tightening in his gut ever since Claire had hung up on him five hours ago.

He walked past his head of security, a broad-shouldered man named Viktor, who was standing near the front portico holding a satellite phone.

"Is she at Saint Jude’s?" Damian asked sharply, not bothering to slow his pace as he walked into the marble foyer. "Which floor did Dr. Vance place her on?"

Viktor hesitated, swapping a nervous glance with the lieutenant standing behind him. "Boss... Mrs. Moreland isn't at Saint Jude's."

Damian stopped dead in his tracks. He turned slowly, his grey eyes turning to ice. "What do you mean she isn't at Saint Jude's? I gave explicit orders for the escort detail to take her there."

"The escort detail never saw her leave, sir," Viktor said, his voice dropping into a tense, cautious register. "They were parked at the front gate as instructed. At 2:00 AM, when Dr. Vance called saying she hadn't arrived for check-in, we entered the house."

Damian’s jaw tightened. "And?"

"The house is empty, Mr. Moreland."

Damian didn't wait for another word. He turned and strode up the grand curved staircase, taking the steps two at a time, his polished leather shoes striking the marble like gunfire. He threw open the heavy mahogany doors of the master suite.

The room was pristine. The bed was made. The primary closet stood half-open; several garment bags and two leather suitcases were missing from the far rack.

Damian turned and walked rapidly down the hall into the nursery—the nursery he had spent three hundred thousand dollars custom-building over the past four months, complete with imported Italian wooden cribs and hand-painted murals.

The room was completely bare of personal items. The silver rattle his mother had given him lay abandoned on the changing table.

Damian marched down to the kitchen.

There, sitting on the dark slate island beneath the soft glow of the pendant lights, lay Claire’s iPhone.

Beside it, reflecting the light like a dropped drop of mercury, sat her five-carat platinum wedding ring.

Damian stepped toward the island, his chest heaving silently. He reached out with a hand that was visibly shaking, picking up the heavy ring.

Beneath the ring lay a single sheet of white cream stationery from his own study.

Written in Claire’s elegant, precise cursive were four words:

Do not look for us.

Damian stared at the note for thirty seconds without breathing.

"Viktor!" he roared, the sound tearing through the quiet mansion with terrifying force.

May you like

Viktor sprinted into the kitchen, his hand resting on the grip of his concealed firearm. "Sir!"

"Lock down every airstrip, every marina, and every train station from Boston to Philadelphia," Damian commanded, his face twisted into a mask of pure, murderous rage. "Put every soldier we have on the streets. I want every vehicle leaving Westchester searched. Find my wife!"
