PART 5: THE NIGHT SOMEONE WANTED HER SILENT

PART 5: THE NIGHT SOMEONE WANTED HER SILENT

The photograph remained on the table.

Nobody touched it.

Nobody wanted to.

Because sometimes an object can feel more dangerous than a weapon.

The image was simple.

Lila lying in the hospital bed.

Pale.

Weak.

Unaware that someone had been watching her.

But the message beneath it changed everything.

You think the baby survived because you were lucky?

You have no idea what really happened that night.

Adrian read it again.

Then again.

His jaw tightened.

“Who sent this?”

No one answered.

Because they were all thinking the same thing.

Whoever sent it knew about the pregnancy.

They knew about the hospital.

They knew enough to get close.

Too close.

Eleanor stepped forward.

“Call the police.”

Adrian looked at her.

She expected hesitation.

But there wasn’t any.

He immediately picked up his phone.

That alone surprised her.

Because the old Adrian would have tried to handle everything himself.

Protect the family image.

Avoid scandal.

But not anymore.

Not after almost losing Lila.

The police arrived within an hour.

They examined the letter.

The photograph.

The envelope.

The security footage from the house.

The officer looked serious.

“Has anyone threatened your wife before?”

Everyone went quiet.

Adrian looked at Lila.

She looked down.

The answer was yes.

But not like this.

The officer noticed.

“Mrs. Whitcomb?”

Lila hesitated.

Then:

“Yes.”

Adrian turned.

“You never told me?”

Her eyes filled.

“I didn’t want more problems.”

That sentence hurt.

Because it sounded exactly like something she would say.

The same way she hid pain.

The same way she protected everyone else.

“What happened?”

The officer asked gently.

Lila looked at Eleanor.

Then at Adrian.

Finally she spoke.

“Before the wedding…”

“I received messages.”

Adrian froze.

“What messages?”

Lila swallowed.

“They said I wasn’t good enough.”

“They said I was ruining Adrian’s future.”

“Who sent them?”

“I don’t know.”

“Did you keep them?”

She shook her head.

“No.”

“Why?”

Her voice became small.

“Because I thought it was just someone angry.”

Adrian closed his eyes.

Someone had been attacking her.

And she had faced it alone.

Again.

The investigation began.

But no one expected what they found next.

The police traced the photograph.

The angle.

The location.

The time.

And then they discovered something.

The picture had been taken from inside the hospital.

Not outside.

Inside.

Someone had access.

Someone who belonged there.

That night, Adrian stayed awake.

Sitting beside Lila.

Watching her sleep.

Every time she moved, he looked up.

Every time she breathed deeply, he relaxed.

He hated that he needed proof she was okay.

Because she should never have been in danger.

Not in his home.

Not in his family.

Not anywhere.

At three in the morning, Eleanor came downstairs.

She found him awake.

“You should sleep.”

He looked at her.

“So should you.”

She sat across from him.

“I keep thinking about that morning.”

Adrian knew exactly which morning.

“The stick.”

Her eyes filled.

“Yes.”

“I walked upstairs angry.”

A pause.

“I wanted to teach her a lesson.”

Her voice broke.

“But she taught me one instead.”

Adrian said nothing.

Because he understood.

“I thought she was lazy.”

Eleanor whispered.

“But she was exhausted.”

“I thought she was disrespectful.”

“But she was afraid.”

“I thought she didn’t care about this family.”

A tear fell.

“But she was trying harder than anyone.”

Adrian looked away.

Because hearing his mother admit it hurt.

Not because he wanted her punished.

Because he wished she had realized sooner.

The next morning, something unexpected happened.

Lila woke up crying.

Adrian rushed to her side.

“What’s wrong?”

She looked terrified.

“I remembered.”

His heart stopped.

“Remembered what?”

She touched her stomach.

“The night before the wedding.”

“What about it?”

She looked at him.

“I wasn’t sick because of stress.”

A pause.

“I was poisoned.”

The room went silent.

Adrian stared.

“What?”

Lila’s hands shook.

“I thought I was imagining things.”

“But after dinner…”

“I felt dizzy.”

“My stomach hurt.”

“I couldn’t breathe properly.”

He went pale.

“Who gave you something?”

“I don’t know.”

Then she looked toward the doorway.

Toward Eleanor.

“I thought it was someone in the house.”

Everyone froze.

The police returned immediately.

The kitchen.

The food.

The drinks.

The wedding leftovers.

Everything was checked.

And then…

They found something.

A small container hidden behind the pantry shelves.

No label.

No name.

But inside were traces of a substance that could cause severe bleeding.

The same type of reaction Lila had suffered.

Adrian felt sick.

Someone hadn’t just wanted to hurt her.

They had planned it.

Carefully.

Quietly.

On the night she entered the family.

The officer looked at them.

“This wasn’t random.”

Everyone listened.

“This person knew exactly what they were doing.”

A pause.

“And they were close enough to prepare everything.”

Adrian’s eyes moved slowly.

Across the room.

Toward the people he trusted.

Toward the people who had been there.

The question nobody wanted to ask appeared.

Who?

Then Eleanor noticed something.

Something small.

Something she had ignored.

The morning of the wedding…

Someone had entered the kitchen.

Someone she thought was helping.

Someone she had thanked.

Her face suddenly changed.

“Oh my God.”

Everyone turned.

“What?”

Eleanor looked terrified.

“It wasn’t a stranger.”

Her voice shook.

“I know who was in the kitchen.”

The room became silent.

“Who?”

Eleanor whispered the name.

May you like

And everyone froze.

Because it was the last person anyone expected.
