PART 7: THE LIE THAT ALMOST DESTROYED EVERYTHING

PART 7: THE LIE THAT ALMOST DESTROYED EVERYTHING
For several seconds…
Nobody moved.
The words made no sense.
Lila?
The woman who had nearly died?
The woman still too weak to walk without help?
The woman who apologized even when she was the one suffering?
She had supposedly attacked Claire?
Adrian looked at the officer.
“That’s impossible.”
The officer didn’t argue.
“I know it sounds unlikely.”
“Then why are you telling us?”
“Because Claire has evidence.”
Eleanor’s face changed.
“What evidence?”
The officer looked down at his notes.
“An injury report.”
“A video from a nearby security camera.”
“And a witness.”
Lila went pale.
“I didn’t do that.”
Adrian immediately moved beside her.
“I know.”
But she looked terrified.
Not because she feared the accusation.
Because she remembered something.
“I saw Claire that night.”
Everyone turned.
“When?”
Lila closed her eyes.
“After dinner.”
“I went downstairs because I couldn’t sleep.”
“You weren’t feeling well?”
She nodded.
“I wanted water.”
“And Claire was there.”
Adrian frowned.
“What happened?”
Lila swallowed.
“She was angry.”
“About what?”
“I don’t know.”
“She said I was ruining everything.”
A pause.
“She said I took what belonged to someone else.”
The officer exchanged a look with his partner.
“Why didn’t you tell anyone?”
Lila looked down.
“Because she left before I could understand.”
“And because…”
Her voice became smaller.
“I thought maybe I imagined it.”
Adrian felt his chest tighten.
Because that was the worst part.
Lila had been hurt so many times that she had stopped trusting her own feelings.
The officer continued.
“Mrs. Whitcomb, Claire claims you confronted her.”
“She says you pushed her.”
“That she fell.”
Lila shook her head.
“No.”
“Did you touch her?”
“No.”
Her answer was immediate.
But the officer remained serious.
“The camera footage shows two women arguing.”
Adrian looked confused.
“Where?”
“Near the garden.”
“After midnight.”
“That’s when the incident happened.”
They watched the footage.
The image was blurry.
But clear enough.
Claire stood facing Lila.
Her body language was aggressive.
Lila looked frightened.
Then Claire stepped closer.
Too close.
She grabbed Lila’s arm.
Lila pulled away.
And Claire fell backward.
The screen froze.
Everyone stared.
Because the truth was obvious.
Claire had created the scene.
“Then why did she say Lila attacked her?”
Adrian asked.
The officer looked uncomfortable.
“Because she wanted attention on Lila.”
“Not herself.”
A pause.
“And because she wasn’t acting alone.”
The room became cold.
Again.
Someone else.
Another person.
Another layer.
The police searched Claire’s belongings.
They found messages.
Encrypted conversations.
Payments.
And one name appeared repeatedly.
Victor Whitcomb.
Adrian froze.
His uncle.
Eleanor’s older brother.
A man who had disappeared from the family years ago.
A man everyone believed had moved abroad.
Eleanor sat down.
“No.”
Adrian looked at her.
“You know him?”
She stared at the name.
“He was my brother.”
Her voice trembled.
“But he hated this family.”
“Why?”
She looked away.
“Because he believed my father chose me over him.”
A pause.
“He spent his entire life angry.”
The police uncovered more.
Victor had never left.
He had been living under another name.
Quietly building influence.
Quietly watching.
And Claire?
She had been working for him.
That night, Adrian received a call.
Unknown number.
He answered.
“Hello?”
A man laughed.
A cold laugh.
“So.”
Adrian froze.
“Victor.”
“Yes.”
The voice was calm.
Almost friendly.
“You finally found me.”
“Where is my wife?”
A pause.
“You still think this is about your wife?”
Adrian’s grip tightened.
“What do you want?”
Victor laughed again.
“I want what your family stole from me.”
“You poisoned innocent people for revenge?”
“No.”
The answer came instantly.
“I exposed weakness.”
Silence.
“Your family built itself on lies.”
“Your mother pretending she was strong.”
“Your father pretending he was fair.”
“You pretending you were a good man.”
Adrian felt anger rise.
“Leave them alone.”
Victor became quiet.
Then:
“You still don’t understand.”
“The goal was never Lila.”
Adrian froze.
“What?”
“The goal was to break the family.”
A pause.
“And she was the easiest way.”
The call ended.
Adrian stood there.
Thinking.
Because Victor was right about one thing.
He had succeeded in something.
He had made them turn against each other.
He had made Eleanor blame Lila.
He had made Adrian fail to protect his wife.
He had almost destroyed the family without ever entering the house.
But Victor had made one mistake.
He underestimated Lila.
Because while everyone else was fighting…
She had been quietly remembering.
And when Adrian returned to the room…
She was sitting awake.
Holding something in her hand.
“What is that?”
She looked at him.
“A memory card.”
His face changed.
“Where did you get it?”
“Claire dropped it.”
“When?”
“The night before the wedding.”
Adrian stared.
“Why didn’t you tell anyone?”
Lila looked at him.
“Because I didn’t know what it was.”
She handed it to him.
“But now…”
“I think we should find out.”
They opened the file.
A video appeared.
Dark.
Shaky.
Recorded secretly.
And then they heard a voice.
Claire.
Talking to someone.
Not Victor.
Someone else.
Someone they knew.
Someone inside the family.
The person said:
“Make sure the girl disappears before she has the baby.”
Adrian stopped breathing.
May you like
Because the second voice belonged to…
His father.
