PART 8: THE VOICE FROM THE PAST

PART 8: THE VOICE FROM THE PAST
The room went completely silent.
Nobody moved.
Nobody spoke.
The video continued playing.
A dark screen.
A hidden camera angle.
A conversation that should never have existed.
And then again…
That voice.
Adrian’s father.
Daniel Whitcomb.
The man who had been buried three years ago.
The man everyone believed was gone.
The man Adrian had spent his whole life trying to make proud.
“No…”
Adrian whispered.
The memory card slipped slightly between his fingers.
“That’s not possible.”
Eleanor stared at the screen.
Her face had lost all color.
“Daniel?”
She said his name like she was seeing a ghost.
Lila looked between them.
“Who is Daniel?”
Nobody answered.
Because the answer was too painful.
The video played.
Claire’s voice came first.
“Are you sure about this?”
A man answered.
Older.
Calm.
Cold.
“You asked for control, Claire. I gave it to you.”
“Don’t pretend you’re innocent.”
A pause.
“You wanted her gone too.”
Claire laughed nervously.
“I only wanted revenge.”
The man replied:
“Revenge is for people who want emotions.”
“I want results.”
Adrian stepped closer to the screen.
Trying to hear.
Trying to understand.
The man continued.
“Once the girl loses the baby, Adrian will break.”
“He’ll become desperate.”
“He’ll make mistakes.”
“And then the company returns to us.”
The video stopped.
Nobody breathed.
Because one sentence changed everything.
The company.
The family.
The money.
This had never been about anger.
It was about power.
Adrian turned toward Eleanor.
“My father is alive.”
She looked terrified.
“I don’t understand.”
“You were married to him.”
Her eyes filled.
“I watched him die.”
The words came out broken.
“I was there.”
“He had an accident.”
“He didn’t survive.”
The police were called again.
The video was sent for analysis.
And within hours…
The impossible truth appeared.
The death certificate was real.
The funeral was real.
But the body identification had been incomplete.
The family had buried someone.
They just didn’t know who.
Adrian sat alone in the waiting room.
Everything he believed about his life was collapsing.
His father wasn’t a victim.
He wasn’t a hero.
He was the person who had started everything.
Eleanor sat beside him.
Neither spoke for a long time.
Finally, she whispered:
“I loved him.”
Adrian looked at her.
“I know.”
“He was kind once.”
A tear fell.
“Before money changed him.”
That sentence stayed with him.
Because maybe that was the real tragedy.
People rarely became monsters overnight.
They made one selfish choice.
Then another.
Then another.
Until they couldn’t recognize themselves anymore.
The next morning, the police brought new information.
“Mr. Whitcomb is alive.”
Adrian stood immediately.
“Where?”
“We’re tracking him.”
“Is Lila safe?”
The officer nodded.
“She has protection.”
But Adrian didn’t relax.
Because he knew something.
People who planned for years…
Did not stop because they were discovered.
Back at the hospital, Lila was resting.
Adrian sat beside her.
She opened her eyes.
“You found out.”
He nodded.
“Yes.”
“My father.”
She already knew.
Adrian looked surprised.
“How?”
She smiled weakly.
“I heard the video.”
He looked down.
“I’m sorry.”
“For what?”
“For bringing you into this.”
Lila looked at him.
“Adrian.”
Her voice was soft.
“I almost died because someone wanted to hurt your family.”
“But I survived.”
A pause.
“And now we know the truth.”
He took her hand.
“You’re not scared?”
She thought for a moment.
“I am.”
The honesty surprised him.
“But I’m more scared of going back to pretending everything is okay.”
Those words stayed with him.
Because that was what everyone had done.
Pretend.
Hide.
Ignore.
Until the truth became impossible to avoid.
That evening, the police received a message.
From Daniel Whitcomb.
A single sentence.
Bring Adrian to the old family estate. Alone.
Everyone objected.
The police.
Eleanor.
Even Lila.
“No.”
She held Adrian’s hand.
“You’re not going alone.”
He looked at her.
“He wants me.”
She shook her head.
“No.”
“He wants what he thinks you are.”
A pause.
“He doesn’t know who you became.”
For the first time in months…
Adrian smiled.
Not because things were okay.
But because Lila was right.
He wasn’t the same man.
The man who ignored her.
The man who cared about appearances.
The man who let people suffer quietly.
That man was gone.
The next night, Adrian entered the old estate.
The place where his childhood memories lived.
The place where his father had raised him.
The place where he had learned to hide emotions.
The lights turned on one by one.
And at the end of the hallway…
A man appeared.
Older.
Tired.
But alive.
Daniel Whitcomb.
His father.
Adrian stared.
“Why?”
Daniel smiled faintly.
“Hello, son.”
Adrian’s voice shook.
“Why did you do this?”
Daniel looked at him.
May you like
And said the one thing Adrian never expected.
“Because you were becoming exactly like me.”
