PART 6: THE PERSON WHO SMILED AT THE WEDDING

PART 6: THE PERSON WHO SMILED AT THE WEDDING
The room went silent.
Everyone waited for Eleanor to speak.
But she couldn’t.
Her lips moved.
No sound came out.
Adrian stepped closer.
“Mom.”
His voice was low.
“Who was in the kitchen?”
Eleanor looked at Lila.
Then away.
Because the answer was someone she had defended.
Someone she had trusted.
Someone she never thought she needed to question.
“It was…”
Her voice cracked.
“Claire.”
Adrian frowned.
“Claire?”
Lila looked confused.
“Your cousin?”
Eleanor nodded slowly.
“Yes.”
The name hung in the room.
Claire Whitcomb.
Adrian’s cousin.
The woman who had helped organize the wedding.
The woman who had hugged Lila the night before.
The woman who had smiled and called her “the little sister I never had.”
“No.”
Adrian shook his head.
“That doesn’t make sense.”
Eleanor looked at him.
“I saw her.”
“When?”
“The morning after the wedding.”
“I was cleaning downstairs.”
“She came into the kitchen.”
“She said she wanted to help.”
Adrian’s face changed.
“What did she do?”
Eleanor closed her eyes.
“I don’t know.”
A pause.
“She was near the drinks.”
Lila’s hands tightened around the blanket.
“She gave me tea.”
Everyone turned.
“What?”
Lila looked frightened.
“Before bed.”
“I remember.”
“I was tired.”
“She said it would help me sleep.”
Adrian felt cold.
“What did you do with the cup?”
“I drank it.”
The room went still.
“And after?”
Lila swallowed.
“After that…”
“I don’t remember much.”
The police immediately contacted Claire.
But she was gone.
Her apartment was empty.
Her phone was turned off.
Her car was missing.
She had disappeared the moment they started asking questions.
That alone changed everything.
Adrian stood by the window.
His hands were clenched.
His whole life, he had believed danger came from outside.
From strangers.
From enemies.
But the person who tried to destroy his wife…
Had laughed beside them.
Had taken pictures with them.
Had congratulated them.
Eleanor sat down.
Her face was pale.
“She helped me.”
Adrian looked at her.
“What?”
“She helped with the wedding.”
A tear rolled down her cheek.
“She was here every day.”
“She listened when I complained.”
“She agreed with everything I said.”
She covered her mouth.
“I trusted her.”
And suddenly Adrian understood something.
Claire had not only targeted Lila.
She had studied the family.
She had learned their weaknesses.
Eleanor’s pride.
His need for control.
Lila’s kindness.
She had used every crack.
That evening, another message arrived.
This time.
No photograph.
Just words.
You’re looking in the wrong direction.
Adrian stared at the screen.
Then another message appeared.
Claire was only doing what I asked.
His blood ran cold.
A second later:
You still don’t know who wanted Lila gone.
Everyone froze.
Because there was someone else.
Someone above Claire.
Someone controlling the plan.
The police traced the number.
But before they could locate it…
A final message arrived.
Ask Eleanor why she really hated Lila.
The room became silent.
Eleanor looked confused.
“What does that mean?”
Adrian looked at her.
For the first time…
A terrible thought entered his mind.
Not that his mother had hurt Lila.
But that someone wanted them to believe she had.
The investigation turned.
The police began examining everything.
Not just the wedding.
Not just Claire.
The entire family history.
And then they found something.
A hidden file.
Buried inside an old storage box.
Belonging to Eleanor.
When Adrian opened it, he found letters.
Dozens of them.
All addressed to Eleanor.
No sender.
But the same handwriting.
The same threatening tone.
Make her leave.
She doesn’t belong there.
You know what happens when outsiders enter families like ours.
Adrian looked at his mother.
“You received these?”
Eleanor nodded slowly.
“I thought they were from someone angry.”
“Why didn’t you tell me?”
Her eyes filled.
“Because…”
She stopped.
Then whispered:
“Because the first letter came six months before the wedding.”
Everyone froze.
Six months.
Before Lila even entered the house.
“Mom.”
Adrian’s voice was tense.
“What did the first letter say?”
Eleanor’s hands shook.
She reached into the file.
Pulled out the oldest letter.
Opened it.
Then read:
Your son will marry a woman who will destroy everything.
If you don’t stop it…
She will die.
Nobody spoke.
Because suddenly the truth changed.
Eleanor wasn’t the beginning of the danger.
She was a target too.
Someone had been manipulating her.
Using her fears.
Using her past.
Using her belief that suffering created strength.
Then the police officer received a call.
His face changed.
He walked toward them.
“We found Claire.”
Everyone turned.
“Where?”
The officer hesitated.
“She’s at the hospital.”
Adrian frowned.
“Why?”
A pause.
“She was attacked.”
Silence.
“By who?”
The officer looked at them.
“That’s the problem.”
“She claims…”
May you like
A long pause.
“She claims Lila tried to kill her.”
