Chapter 5 - The Collapse in the Garden

Four months passed.
The commission vote had been postponed indefinitely after Adrian used his financial leverage to freeze Giancarlo’s offshore accounts, plunging his uncle’s faction into a bitter internal power struggle.
Meanwhile, the dynamic inside the Belle Meade estate had shifted irrevocably.
The lie about their marriage had slowly, quietly begun to dissolve into something dangerously real. Adrian no longer spent his nights locked in his study; he spent them in the sitting room, watching Madeline work on restoring small antique boxes she had brought from the shop. They ate breakfast together. They walked through the estate's vast rose gardens in the evening light.
And three weeks ago, in the quiet darkness of the master bedroom, the boundary line had finally snapped. What had started as a fierce, desperate kiss in the hallway had consumed them both, turning their fake marriage into a passionate, breathless reality that left them clinging to each other in the dark until dawn.
Adrian treated her not as a transaction, but as something precious, something he was terrified of breaking.
Yet, a shadow still hung over them. The shadow of Chicago. The shadow of the lie Adrian had carried for six years.
On a warm Tuesday afternoon in late September, Madeline was walking through the estate's glass greenhouse, holding a small brass watering can. She felt strangely lightheaded. For the past two weeks, she had attributed her exhaustion to the stress of renovating the shop, which was now fully reopened in Franklin under Carol’s management.
She stopped beside a row of white hydrangeas. A sudden wave of intense dizziness washed over her, making the world tilt on its axis.
"Elena?" Madeline called out weakly toward the open door of the greenhouse.
Her vision blurred. The sunlight streaming through the glass roof turned into sharp, blinding needles of light. A cold sweat broke out across her forehead, and a sharp, pulling sensation seized her lower abdomen.
The brass watering can slipped from her fingers, clattering loudly against the stone floor.
Madeline reached out to grab the edge of a wooden display table, but her fingers couldn't find a grip. Her knees buckled beneath her.
"Madeline!"
It was Adrian’s voice. He had just returned from a meeting in downtown Nashville and was walking across the lawn toward the greenhouse when he saw her fall.
He moved faster than he ever had in his life. He shattered the glass door of the greenhouse, rushing inside just as Madeline’s body hit the stone floor.
"Madeline! Madeline, open your eyes!" Adrian panicked, scooping her up into his arms. Her skin was deathly pale, her lips blue, and she was completely unresponsive.
"Marco! Get the car!" Adrian roared toward the courtyard, his voice echoing across the estate with terrifying power. "Get the car now!"

He carried her out of the greenhouse, cradling her against his chest as if she were made of thin glass. As he ran toward the idling SUV, he looked down at her face—and felt a wave of absolute, paralyzing horror.
Madeline was unconscious, and on the hem of her light yellow summer dress, a small, dark stain of crimson blood was slowly spreading.
