Chapter 6 - The Emergency Wing

The tires of the heavy SUV screamed as Marco tore through the red lights along West End Avenue, heading straight for St. Catherine’s Medical Center.

Adrian sat in the back seat, holding Madeline’s lifeless hand pressed against his lips. His own heart was hammering so hard he felt like his ribs were about to shatter.

"Faster, Marco!" Adrian barked, his eyes wild with a fear that no gun, no rival mobster, and no threat of death had ever been able to instill in him.

"We're three blocks away, Boss!" Marco yelled back, swerving around a delivery truck.

When the SUV slammed to a halt outside the emergency entrance of St. Catherine’s, Adrian didn't wait for the guards to open the door. He kicked it open, scooped Madeline into his arms, and burst through the sliding glass doors of the private medical wing.

"Get me a doctor!" he shouted. His voice tore through the quiet hallway like a thunderclap. "Any doctor! I don't care who! Get someone out here now!"

Nurses and orderly staff scrambled. Two of Adrian’s security men struggled to keep pace behind him, trying to clear the hallway while managing the phones that were ringing nonstop with calls from lieutenants demanding updates on Giancarlo's latest movements.

Adrian ignored them all. He laid Madeline onto a rolling gurney that two emergency nurses rushed toward him.

"What happened?" a young doctor demanded, checking Madeline’s pulse while pushing the gurney toward the double doors of the surgical suite.

"She collapsed in the garden," Adrian said, running alongside the gurney, holding her limp hand. "She was pale, nauseous... and she’s bleeding!"

"Sir, you have to stay here," the doctor said, pointing to the red line painted on the floor outside the surgical wing.

"She is my wife!" Adrian raged, trying to push past the doctor. "If you don't save her, I will tear this hospital down brick by brick!"

A senior nurse stepped directly into his path, her eyes steady and unyielding despite the terrifying aura of the man standing before her.

"Mr. DeLuca, you cannot go through those doors," she said firmly.

"You don't understand—"

"I understand perfectly," she cut him off. "My job is to keep her alive. Your job right now is to let me do it. Back up."

Adrian froze. For one unbearable second, the most powerful man in Tennessee stood helpless in a sterile hospital hallway, his tie hanging loose, his jacket covered in dirt from the greenhouse floor, staring at the closed double doors where the woman he loved had just disappeared.

He sank into a plastic chair against the wall, burying his face in his calloused hands.

Two hours passed. Two hours that felt like two centuries.

At 4:15 AM, the double doors finally swung open. A middle-aged female surgeon wearing blue scrubs stepped out into the hallway, pulling off her surgical mask.

Adrian snapped upright, rushing toward her. "How is she? Is she alive?"

"Mrs. DeLuca is stable, Mr. DeLuca," the doctor said tiredly. "The bleeding has stopped, and we have stabilized her blood pressure."

Adrian let out a long, shuddering breath, his shoulders sagging with relief. "Thank God. Thank God... can I see her?"

"In a moment," the doctor said, looking at him with a strange, probing expression. "Mr. DeLuca, how long have you and your wife been trying to conceive?"

Adrian froze. A sharp, bitter pain struck his chest. "We haven't been trying. I... I can't have children. I was injured six years ago. The medical records from Chicago—"

"I don't care about records from Chicago six years ago, Mr. DeLuca," the doctor interrupted gently, handing him a digital clipboard. "I care about the blood panel we just ran in my lab."

Adrian looked down at the screen. The numbers meant nothing to him, but the line at the bottom was highlighted in bright yellow text.

HCG Level: 14,200 mIU/mL — Positive for Gestational Pregnancy (Approx. 8 Weeks).

Adrian’s breath stopped entirely. The floor beneath his feet seemed to disappear. "What... what is this?"

"Your wife is eight weeks pregnant, Mr. DeLuca," the doctor said softly. "The collapse was caused by severe iron deficiency and acute physical exhaustion. The fetus is healthy, but Mrs. DeLuca’s body is under immense strain. She needs complete rest."

Adrian stared at the word Positive.

He wasn't infertile.

The Chicago doctor who had told him six years ago that he could never have children... had been lying.
