Chapter 8 - The Awakening of the Heart

When Madeline opened her eyes the next morning, she was no longer in the sterile hospital room.

She was back in the master bedroom of the Belle Meade estate. The morning sunlight poured through the sheer linen curtains, casting a warm, golden glow across the silk sheets.

Beside the bed, sitting in a velvet armchair, was Adrian.

He hadn't slept. His suit jacket was off, his dress shirt unbuttoned at the collar, and he was holding a warm cup of tea in his hands, watching her with an intensity that made her breath catch.

"Adrian?" she murmured, her voice raspy from sleep. She tried to sit up, but a sharp wave of fatigue made her sink back into the pillows.

"Don't move," Adrian said gently. He set the tea down on the nightstand, leaned over the bed, and gently helped her adjust the pillows behind her back. His touch was lighter than air, almost reverent.

Madeline reached down, touching her lower stomach. Tears gathered at the corners of her brown eyes as the memory of the hospital flooded back to her.

"The doctor..." she whispered, her voice trembling. "Adrian, they said... they said I’m..."

"Pregnant," Adrian finished for her.

Madeline looked away, a tear slipping down her cheek. "I’m so sorry, Adrian. I know... I know our contract was supposed to be simple. I know you can't... I know what your family said about Chicago. I don't know how this happened, but I swear to you, I haven't been with anyone else! I swear on my mother’s grave!"

She was terrified he would think she had betrayed him. Terrified he would accuse her of trapped scheming.

Before she could say another word, Adrian took her face in both of his broad hands. He leaned down and pressed his forehead against hers, his breath warm against her lips.

"Madeline," he whispered, his voice cracking with an emotion she had never heard from him before. "Look at me."

She opened her eyes, looking into his dark gaze—and saw that his eyes were glistening with unshed tears.

"You didn't betray me," Adrian said softly. "The doctor in Chicago lied. Giancarlo paid him to forge my records six years ago so he could steal my position. I was never infertile, Madeline. You are carrying my child. Our child."

Madeline gasped, her hands flying to her mouth. "What?"

"It was a lie," Adrian repeated, kissing her tears away, his lips moving from her cheeks to her lips in a deep, desperate kiss that conveyed everything he had suffered and everything he now felt. "My uncle tried to destroy my life, but you... you brought me back from the dead."

Madeline wrapped her arms around his neck, pulling him down against her chest as she sobbed with pure, unadulterated relief.

"A baby," she wept softly into his neck. "We're going to have a baby."

"Yes," Adrian whispered, resting his hand gently against her stomach, feeling the warmth beneath her skin. "And no one in this world is ever going to hurt either of you again."

He pulled back slightly, looking down into her eyes with a fierce, absolute devotion that made her heart soar.

"The contract is over, Madeline," Adrian declared quietly. "I don't care about the year. I don't care about the annulment. I love you. I have loved you since the day you stood in that dusty antique shop and told me to go to hell. If you want to leave after this child is born, I will give you everything I own. But if you stay... I will give you my life."

Madeline looked at the man who had started as her creditor, become her husband, and now held her heart in his hands.

"I'm not going anywhere, Adrian DeLuca," she said, pulling his lips back down to hers. "I told you once... I fix things that aren't broken yet. And you are definitely worth saving."
