Chapter 3 - The Secret Medicine

Weeks bled into a comfortable, unspoken routine. Kyle’s leg healed with astonishing speed—far faster than any normal wolf’s constitution—thanks to the potent herbs Meera brewed and the sheer, unnatural resilience of his Lycan biology. Yet he found himself completely unable to leave.
Every time he stood by the open door, looking toward the deep woods that led back to his throne, a heavy, suffocating weight pulled him back toward the hearth where Meera sat spinning wool by the fire.
The mate bond was no longer just a spark; it was a wildfire consuming him from the inside out.
Then came the night that changed everything.
Meera had fallen asleep on the rug beside the hearth, exhausted after a long day of harvesting honey. Her tunic had slipped slightly off her right shoulder, exposing the ugly, jagged lines of the rejection brand she had carried for five years.
Even in sleep, her brow was pinched with a subtle, chronic tension, as if the pain of the scar followed her into her dreams.
Kyle shifted silently on the rug, his large frame casting a long shadow in the flickering firelight. He crept closer to her, his golden eyes locking onto the pale, mutilated skin of her shoulder.
Raw.
Painful.
Still inflamed and weeping slightly at the edges, even after half a decade.
Something inside the Alpha King’s beast broke. The injustice of it—that someone so gentle, so fiercely compassionate, had been branded like cattle by a pack of arrogant cowards—sent a surge of blinding, lethal rage through his veins. But beneath the anger was an aching, unbearable tenderness.
He lowered his massive head.
Slowly, carefully, so as not to wake her, he pressed his warm, rough tongue against the angry red edges of the rejection brand.
Meera let out a soft, involuntary sigh in her sleep, her body relaxing visibly against the woolen rug as the chronic, burning ache in her shoulder dimmed beneath his touch.
Encouraged by her peaceful reaction, Kyle lingered. He gently, reverently licked the scarred flesh over and over again, channeling the innate, miraculous healing properties of a true Alpha’s saliva deep into her damaged tissue.
The next morning, Meera woke up with a start, rolling over on the rug and reaching instinctively for her shoulder.
She froze.
The constant, burning throb that had haunted her every waking moment for five years was... gone. The angry red edges of the crescent-shaped brand had turned a pale, quiet silver. The skin felt cool, smooth, and entirely painless.
For the first time since she was seventeen, she could touch her shoulder without flinching.
Meera stared at her fingers in absolute shock. She knew the old legends whispered among outcast Omegas around winter campfires. There was only one thing in the entire world capable of healing a permanent rejection mark.
The touch of a true mate.
Her heart hammered wildly against her ribs. Impossible. No one touched her there. No human, anyway.
Her eyes snapped across the room.
There, sitting by the door, was the giant black wolf, his golden eyes watching her with a calm, unreadable intensity.
Meera swallowed hard, shaking her head as she stood up. You’re losing your mind, she told herself. It’s just a coincidence. It was the meadowsweet ointment. It couldn't possibly be... him.

And yet, the following night, Kyle did it again. And the night after that. Every single evening, while she slept, the wolf tended to her broken skin with meticulous, worshipful care.
The brand continued to fade until it looked like nothing more than a faint, silvery birthmark.
