Chapter 4 - Confessions in the Dark

The rain returned on a Tuesday night, drumming a steady, hypnotic rhythm against the glass of the cabin windows.

Meera sat on the floor with her back against the stone hearth, a cup of hot chamomile tea cradled between her hands. The giant black wolf lay beside her, his chin resting on her knee, radiating a deep, comforting heat that chased away the damp chill of the room.

For months, she had kept her past locked away behind a wall of biting sarcasm and stubborn independence. But tonight, staring into the flickering embers of the fire, the weight of her memories became too heavy to carry alone.

She reached down, her fingers sinking slowly into the thick, midnight fur behind the wolf’s ears.

“I never told you why I live out here, did I?” she whispered into the quiet shadows.

The wolf’s ears flicked forward, his golden eyes locking onto her face.

“His name was Rowan,” she continued, her voice trembling slightly as the ghosts of her youth stepped out of the dark. “He was the Alpha’s son. When we were seventeen, he swore up and down that he would make me his Luna, no matter what the elders said. He kissed me under the old oak tree by the river and promised me the world.”

Kyle went completely rigid beside her. The name struck him like a physical blow. Rowan of Thornmere. A minor, ambitious pack leader in the southern hills.

“Then his father demanded a political marriage with a wealthy northern heiress,” Meera smiled bitterly, staring down at the amber tea in her cup. “And Rowan folded like paper. He didn't even look me in the eye when they dragged me to the courtyard. He just stood there while they burned this into my skin.”

She touched her right shoulder, where the invisible brand now lay healed and smooth.

“He cried while they did it,” Meera whispered, a tear finally spilling over her lashes and tracing a hot track down her cheek. “He held my hand for a second before the iron touched my flesh and said he loved me... and still let them destroy me.”

Her fingers tightened convulsively in the wolf’s fur, her voice cracking with the agony of a wound that went far deeper than skin.

“That was when I learned love doesn't mean a damn thing if someone is too cowardly to choose you when it costs them something.”

Kyle’s heart nearly stopped beating.

The words pierced his chest like a silver dagger. Because she wasn't just talking to a stray animal. She was confessing her deepest, most agonizing trauma directly to the most powerful Alpha King in the kingdom—a king who had spent weeks hiding behind fur and silence, too cowardly to reveal his own identity because he was terrified of what she would say.

He was lying to her every single night simply by staying silent.

Tell her, his wolf roared inside his consciousness, thrashing against the boundaries of his mind. Tell her who you are. Claim your mate!

Kyle swallowed hard, his jaw clenching so tightly his teeth ached. He promised himself he would tell her. Tomorrow. When the sun came up, he would shift, look her in the eyes, and lay his entire kingdom at her feet.

Brilliant plan. Except tomorrow never came.

Because the next afternoon, a carriage bearing the crest of the Eastern Range rolled up to Meera’s quiet cabin.
