Chapter 5 - The Offer from the East

The knock on the cabin door broke the peaceful afternoon silence.

Meera looked up from her workbench, wiping honey off her hands with a linen cloth. Visitors were almost unheard of out here. Frowning, she walked over and pulled the heavy oak door open.

Standing on her porch was a man who looked entirely out of place in the wild timberlands. He wore a tailored charcoal coat embroidered with silver thread, his dark hair swept back neatly, and a disarming, charismatic smile playing across his handsome features.

“Meera of the Edge Woods, I presume?” the man asked, his voice smooth and rich.

“Who are you?” Meera asked, instinctively narrowing her eyes, her hand sliding toward the small utility knife tucked into her belt.

“Lord Dayne,” he introduced himself with a polite bow, stepping back slightly to show he posed no immediate threat. “An Alpha from the Eastern Range. I’ve spent the last three days asking around the villages for the legendary healer who cures animals others leave for dead. Word travels fast, even out here in the sticks.”

Meera crossed her arms over her chest. “I’m not interested in trading with lords or packs. If you brought an injured hound, leave it on the porch.”

Dayne chuckled softly, his dark eyes sparkling with genuine amusement. “Actually, I didn't bring an animal. I brought an offer.”

He stepped closer, leaning against the wooden doorframe, and allowed his gaze to drift past her into the cabin, where the giant black wolf was sitting by the hearth, watching every move Dayne made with eyes that burned like molten gold.

Dayne’s smile faltered for a fraction of a second as he felt the heavy, oppressive aura radiating from the animal, but he quickly recovered.

“Thornmere’s loss was the kingdom’s greatest oversight,” Dayne said smoothly, his voice dropping an octave as he looked back down at Meera. “I saw your work in the villages. I saw the way you heal. And... I happened to notice your shoulder when you reached for your jar.”

Meera went completely still. Her hand dropped from her belt.

“Thornmere’s brand is unmistakable,” Dayne continued quietly. “They cast you out because they were fools who valued politics over power. But in the Eastern Range, we value strength and skill. I want to offer you a proper house in my territory. Your own healing practice. A generous salary in silver. Respect. And a station worthy of your talent.”

He reached out, gently capturing her hand in his.

“Come east with me, Meera,” Dayne murmured, his thumb brushing softly over her knuckles. “I’d like the chance to know you.”

Meera stood frozen, staring up at him. For five years, she had been treated like garbage, an outcast living on scraps and silence. Here was an Alpha offering her a real life, dignity, safety, and a future where she didn't have to hide in the woods.

She didn't say yes.

But she didn't say no, either.

From deep inside the cabin, a low, window-rattling growl shook the wooden floorboards.

Dayne flinched, stepping back as the giant black wolf rose slowly to his paws, his fur standing on end, his golden eyes locked onto Dayne with such lethal, murderous intent that the Eastern Lord instinctively reached for the sword at his hip.

“That’s a dangerous beast you’ve got there,” Dayne swallowed hard, forcing a tight smile. “Think about my offer, Meera. I’ll send a messenger in three days.”

With that, Dayne turned and hurried down the steps, practically diving into his carriage before the driver whipped the horses into a frantic retreat.

The moment the carriage disappeared down the tree-lined road, the front door slammed shut under the force of a sudden, unnatural gust of wind.

Kyle shifted out of the shadows, his massive body trembling with a blind, possessive fury.

Meera turned to face him, her own temper flaring at the sight of the beast glaring at her as if she were his property.

“You will refuse him,” a deep, resonant voice echoed through the cabin.

Meera stopped dead.

She blinked, staring at the empty room, then down at the wolf. Had she imagined it? Had the tension finally cracked her mind?

“Will I?” she challenged, her chin lifting defiantly.

The wolf took a menacing step toward her, his golden eyes blazing with an emotion that felt terrifyingly human.

“I’m not yours, Your Majesty,” Meera snapped, using the sarcastic title she had given him on day one. “I don't belong to Thornmere, and I certainly don't belong to a stray wolf who sleeps on my rug!”

Inside Kyle’s chest, his beast roared a deafening, desperate command: YOU ARE MY MATE! TELL HER!

But the fear of rejection—the terrifying realization that she might look at the King of the North with the same hatred she held for Rowan—paralyzed his throat. He couldn't form the words in human speech. He couldn't risk losing her.

So, overwhelmed by rage, jealousy, and utter helplessness, Kyle did the only thing he could think of.

He turned around, burst through the back door, and bolted into the deep woods like a ghost vanishing into the dark.
