Chapter 3 - The Corporate Web

By eight o'clock that evening, a gale-force rainstorm slammed into the coastal estate, rattling the leaded glass panes of the formal dining hall.
At the head of the long mahogany dining table sat Julian. At the opposite end sat Camille, her expression cold and stiff as she picked at her dinner with a silver fork.
"You humiliated me today, Julian," Camille said, setting her fork down with a sharp metallic clink that echoed off the high walls. "In front of the entire domestic staff. Do you have any idea what the household supervisor is saying? They think you chose a maid over your fiancée."
Julian didn't look up from his tablet, where he was analyzing shipping manifest reports for the North Atlantic fleet. "The staff does not gossip, Camille. They work. And you had no legal authority to terminate an employee whose contract is administered through the estate's primary trust."
Camille stood up, her napkin crumpling in her manicured hand as she walked down the length of the room, stopping beside his heavy leather chair.
"She is a risk, Julian!" Camille hissed, leaning down, her expensive perfume filling the air. "She’s an opportunistic liar who slipped into this estate three years ago using a forged reference. My father warned your board about her months ago!"
Julian slowly turned his head to look at her. His gray eyes were entirely devoid of heat. "Your father knows about Mara?"
Camille caught herself, a subtle flicker of panic crossing her features before she smoothed it over with practiced arrogance. "Of course he knows! Our families have integrated our corporate assets! We control seventy percent of the regional port infrastructure. Do you really believe my father would allow a low-class woman to compromise a multi-billion-dollar corporate merger?"
Julian closed his tablet with a soft click. "The merger is contingent on the finalization of our marriage contract in October."
"And it will be finalized," Camille said, her voice dropping into a possessive whisper. She raised her left hand, hovering the diamond ring inches from his face. "You signed the preliminary syndicate agreement, Julian. If you breach this engagement without legal cause, my father's holding firm automatically triggers the buyout clause on your northern terminal leases. You will lose control of your primary fleet overnight."
Julian stared at the sparkling diamond. To the press, it was a symbol of an elite union between two massive financial dynasties. To him, in this room, it looked like a iron collar.
"Is that a threat, Camille?" Julian asked softly.
"It is financial reality," Camille replied, smoothing her silk skirt. "Now, I want that girl and her child off this property by tomorrow morning. If they are still here when my wedding consultant arrives, I will have my father convene an emergency meeting of your board of directors."
She turned on her heel and glided out of the dining room, her silk train sweeping across the floor with a soft, predatory sound.

Julian sat alone in the vast room. He reached into his coat pocket, pulling out a small silver key that opened a secure drawer beneath his desk in the study.
It was time to investigate his own past.
