Chapter 6 - The Confrontation

Ten minutes later, Arthur Rourke entered the master study wearing a silk dressing gown, his expression filled with irritated authority.

"Julian, what is the meaning of this late-night summons?" Arthur demanded, stepping into the room. "Vance said it was an emergency regarding the northern port leases."

Julian stood behind his desk, flanked by Vance. Standing quietly near the hearth was Mara, holding sleeping Ivy in her arms.

Arthur’s eyes drifted toward Mara, and a sharp, cold shadow passed over his face.

"Why is this servant still on the premises?" Arthur asked, turning back to Julian. "Camille told me there was an issue earlier today. I assumed you had handled it."

"I have handled it, Arthur," Julian said smoothly. He reached into his coat pocket, pulled out the silver hummingbird, and set it on the dark leather blotter between them. "Do you recognize this?"

Arthur glanced at the charm, his face remaining a mask of seasoned corporate composure. "It looks like a piece of cheap silver jewelry. Why should I care about this?"

"Because four years ago, you paid three million dollars to erase the woman who wore it from my life," Julian said, his baritone voice dropping into a lethal register.

Arthur didn't flinch, but his eyes narrowed slightly. "Julian, you are tired. You are allowing stress over the merger to cloud your judgment."

"I have the offshore wire records, Arthur," Julian continued, pushing a document folder across the desk. "I have the Maine medical records. I have the restored county marriage entry that Vance retrieved an hour ago from the regional archives. And I have my memory."

Arthur looked down at the file folder, but he didn't open it. He slowly drew himself up, his presence turning cold and dismissive.

"Even if any of that absurd fantasy were true," Arthur said softly, "it changes nothing. You signed the syndicate agreement, Julian. If you attempt to cancel the merger or dissolve your engagement to Camille, my firm will execute the default clauses. We will freeze your operating capital, seize the northern terminals, and tie Hartwell Global up in litigation for a decade."

"You think I care about the terminals?" Julian asked, taking a step around the desk until he stood inches from the older man.

May you like

"You are a Hartwell," Arthur sneered. "Your legacy is built on those terminals."

"My legacy is standing right there," Julian said, pointing directly toward Mara and his sleeping daughter.
