Chapter 4 - The Hidden Records

At midnight, while the mansion slept beneath the drumming rain, Julian walked down the narrow secondary corridor of the East Wing.
He stopped outside Room 04—a modest space reserved for junior housekeeping staff. A faint sliver of warm light filtered beneath the door.
Julian knocked once, softly, and turned the brass handle.
The room was humble, but impeccably maintained. A small single bed sat against the inner wall, where little Ivy lay fast asleep under a worn yellow blanket, her plush rabbit tucked against her chin.
Near the window, Mara sat at a small wooden desk, mending a loose seam on her gray uniform by the light of a small desk lamp.
She turned sharply as the door opened, her hand flying to her throat as she saw the master of the estate standing in her doorway.
"Mr. Hartwell," Mara whispered, glancing quickly at her sleeping daughter before rising. "What are you doing here? If Miss Rourke sees you—"
"Miss Rourke is in her wing," Julian said, closing the door quietly behind him.
He walked over to the desk and laid a thick yellowed file flat under the lamp's light.
Mara looked down at the file. Her breath hitched.
Inside were photographs, satellite coordinates, and medical reports from late 2022.
The top photograph showed a quiet wooden cottage tucked near the rocky coastline of Maine. Standing on the porch was a man with a bandaged shoulder—Julian—holding a mug. Sitting beside him on the wooden steps, wearing an oversized flannel shirt, was Mara, her head resting peacefully against his arm, a bright smile lighting up her face.
Beneath the photograph was a birth certificate from a rural county clinic dated three years ago.
Child Name: Ivy Ellis Hartwell. Mother: Mara Ellis. Father: Julian Arthur Hartwell.
Mara sank back against the edge of the desk, her knees trembling so violently she could barely stand. She covered her mouth with both hands, silent tears spilling over her lashes.
Julian stood motionless, his broad chest rising and falling heavily as he stared at the birth certificate, his own signature written in firm ink at the bottom of the page.
"You knew," Julian whispered, his baritone voice cracking with shock. "You knew she was my daughter."
Mara wept quietly, her shoulders shaking. "I tried to tell them, Julian! Four years ago, after your boat capsized... I pulled you from the water. We lived in that cottage for six months while you recovered your strength. You had lost your memory of the corporate world, but you knew who I was. We were married in a small town court!"
She looked up at him, her dark eyes filled with unbearable pain.
"Then your father's associates found us," Mara whispered. "Arthur Rourke's men came while you were in town buying supplies. They took you away. They told me you were suffering from severe trauma and that if I ever approached you again, they would use their legal power to ruin me and take my baby away. They erased our marriage from the county registry and brought you back here, telling you that you had been in Zurich the entire time!"
Julian took a step forward, his broad hands seizing her shoulders, pulling her up so she was forced to look directly into his eyes.
"Why didn't you fight them?!" Julian demanded, a tortured growl in his chest. "Why did you come back to this house as a maid?!"

"Because I had to be near you!" Mara cried out softly, her fingers gripping his lapels. "I had to know if you were safe! And I needed a job with medical coverage because Ivy was born with a severe pulmonary issue that required specialized care. The estate's employee health trust was the only way I could afford her doctors without attracting Arthur Rourke's attention!"
Julian closed his eyes, a tear escaping his control and tracing down his scarred cheek as the reality of the deception crushed down upon him.
