Chapter 9 - Reclaiming the Past

Three weeks later, the atmosphere at Hartwell House had completely transformed.
The severe, cold silence that had dominated the estate for decades was replaced by the light, chaotic energy of a home lived in. Children’s toys were scattered near the hearth in the library, drawing paper covered the polished tables, and the domestic staff worked with genuine smiles, no longer fearful of sudden dismissals.
Arthur Rourke had formally stepped down from all corporate boards, facing multiple federal indictments for financial fraud and record falsification. Camille had vanished from the social circuit, residing in private seclusion overseas.
On a sunny Saturday afternoon, Julian sat on the rear lawn overlooking the sea, holding Ivy on his shoulders as she laughed and pointed at the gulls flying overhead.
Mara walked out from the terrace, carrying a tray of tea. She wore a simple white summer dress, her dark hair flowing loose over her shoulders, her skin glowing in the coastal breeze.
Julian lowered Ivy gently to the grass, letting the little girl run toward a flowerbed with her plush rabbit.
He walked over to Mara, wrapping his arms around her waist from behind, resting his chin on her shoulder as they watched their daughter play.
"The board approved the full restoration of your legal status today," Julian whispered against her neck. "As far as the state, the firm, and the world are concerned, you are Marina Hartwell. My wife."
Mara turned around in his arms, resting her hands against his broad chest. "It feels surreal, Julian. A month ago, I was scrubbing the foyer steps, terrified that Camille would find out who Ivy was."
"Camille will never step foot on this property again," Julian said firmly. "And you will never scrub another floor unless you want to."
He reached into his pocket and pulled out a small velvet box. When he opened it, a simple, elegant ring made of platinum sat inside—set not with an arrogant seven-carat diamond, but with a small, perfectly cut aquamarine stone that matched the color of the sea off the coast of Maine.

"It’s not a corporate ring," Julian said softly, taking her left hand. "It’s ours."
Mara let out a soft breath as he slid the ring onto her finger. It fit perfectly.
