Chapter 4 - The Ghost in the Office

Over the next seventy-two hours, Evelyn played her part with terrifying perfection.

She didn't scream at Adrian. She didn't demand explanations. When he came home late smelling of expensive perfume and cheap wine, she greeted him from the kitchen island with a quiet, polite smile, her bandaged arm neatly concealed beneath a loose-fitting cashmere sweater.

Adrian assumed she was broken into submission. He assumed the fall down the stairs had taught her her place in the corporate food chain—a bruised animal too terrified to fight back.

On the third night, while Adrian attended a late-night developer gala downtown with Sloane on his arm, Evelyn made her move.

She dressed in all black—dark leggings, a fitted tactical turtleneck, and soft-soled leather boots that made no sound against the polished hardwood floors of the penthouse.

She walked down the private interior staircase into Adrian’s ground-floor study.

The room smelled of old leather, cigar smoke, and expensive cologne. The mahogany desk was spotless, devoid of papers, reflecting the cold minimalist aesthetic Adrian cultivated for public consumption.

Evelyn walked straight to the north wall, standing before a large, framed oil painting of a Chicago skyscraper at dusk.

She remembered the combination not because Adrian had told her, but because she had once accidentally watched him input it while talking to an offshore accountant: 19-89-04—the year his first failed development company went under and the date they met.

Her fingers danced across the digital keypad hidden behind the hinged frame.

Beep. Beep. Beep.

The heavy steel door of the wall safe swung outward with a soft, pneumatic hiss.

Inside sat stacks of thick manila folders, notarized bank statements from Swiss accounts, and a black flash drive labeled simply: MASTER_LEDGER_2026.

Evelyn didn't waste time reading through every document. She pulled the flash drive from its slot, slid three specific paper folders containing signed bribery receipts into her backpack, and closed the safe door.

As she turned to leave, her eyes caught a small, blinking red light mounted in the corner of the ceiling molding.

A security camera.

Adrian’s private backup camera—one that didn't feed into the main cloud network, but recorded directly to a local hard drive hidden inside the media console.

Evelyn paused. A slow, razor-sharp smile touched the corners of her lips.

She stepped directly into the frame of the lens, looked up, and gave the camera a slow, deliberate wave.

Then she turned and walked out of the study, leaving the door unlocked behind her.
