Chapter 6 - The Phantom Investor

Back in San Diego, forty-eight hours after Evelyn’s departure, the morning sun rose over the Pacific with deceptive brilliance.
Adrian Mercer sat behind his massive quartz desk on the top floor of the Mercer Tower, a steaming cup of artisan espresso in his hand. He felt invincible.
Evelyn had vanished three days ago. Her closet was half-empty, her car was still parked in the garage, and her phone went straight to voicemail. According to the quiet legal consultation Adrian had conducted with his divorce attorney yesterday morning, her sudden disappearance without a forwarding address or a legal representation could easily be filed as abandonment.
In less than a week, he and Sloane would file for formal divorce, marry quietly in Cabo San Lucas, and launch Mercer Renewal at the international fashion summit in Milan with sixty million dollars in venture capital backing.
The office door burst open without a knock.
Sloane strode into the room, her face stark white, her designer handbag clutched so tightly in her fingers that the leather was groaning.
“Adrian,” she breathed out, her voice trembling. “You need to look at the financial wires right now.”
Adrian frowned, leaning back in his executive chair. “Calm down, Sloane. What is it? Did the Singapore fund wire the second tranche?”
“No,” Sloane said, slamming her tablet down flat onto the polished quartz desk screen-up. “The Singapore fund just pulled out. Every single one of them. Simultaneously.”
Adrian sat forward, his smile vanishing. He grabbed the tablet, his eyes scanning the glowing financial notifications.
WIRE TRANSFER REJECTED — ACCOUNT FROZEN. PRIMARY INVESTOR WITHDRAWAL NOTICE RECEIVED. AUDIT INITIATED BY FEDERAL SECURITIES AND EXCHANGE COMMISSION.
“What the hell is this?” Adrian hissed, jumping to his feet. “Who authorized an SEC audit? Call our corporate counsel immediately!”
Before Sloane could reach for her phone, the wall-mounted television behind Adrian’s desk—which was permanently tuned to the financial news network—suddenly flashed with a breaking red banner across the bottom of the screen:
BREAKING NEWS: FEDERAL INVESTIGATORS RAID MERCER URBAN HOLDINGS HEADQUARTERS AMID ALLEGATIONS OF CORPORATE FRAUD, INTELLECTUAL THEFT, AND BRIBERY.
Adrian froze. The coffee cup slipped from his fingers, shattering against the floorboards, splashing dark brown liquid across his Italian leather shoes.
“That’s impossible,” Adrian whispered, his face draining of all color. “The local drives were wiped. The servers were scrubbed clean.”
“Adrian…” Sloane whispered, staring at the glass entryway behind him with wide, terrified eyes.
Adrian slowly turned around.
Standing in the open doorway of his private office were four men in dark federal tactical vests, accompanied by two armed U.S. Marshals and a tall, impeccably tailored man in a charcoal suit who walked with the unhurried grace of an executioner.
Dominic Vale stepped into the room, holding a thick manila folder bearing the federal seal.
“Good morning, Mr. Mercer,” Dominic said smoothly, his dark eyes fixed on Adrian’s terrified face. “Allow me to introduce myself. I’m the new principal equity holder of Mercer Urban Holdings.”
Adrian staggered backward, his hip hitting the edge of the glass desk. “That’s... that’s not possible. We have no external equity partners outside the board!”
“Not we,” Dominic corrected softly, tossing the manila folder onto the shattered coffee stains on the desk. “She does.”

The office door swung wider.
Evelyn Hart walked into the room.
