Chapter 9 - The Final Stitch

The applause that greeted Evelyn Hart when she stepped out onto the runway was not the polite, corporate clapping of people trying to impress a CEO.

It was a standing ovation.

Three hundred people stood in unison beneath the flashing lights, cheering for the woman who had designed every single thread, every pattern, and every philosophical concept behind the clothes they were wearing.

Evelyn walked down the center of the runway, her posture straight, her head high, her expression calm and unyielding. She didn't smile like a pageant contestant; she carried herself like a woman who had walked through hell, rebuilt her soul from the ashes, and taken back her entire world with her bare hands.

At the edge of the stage, she paused, her hand instinctively brushing against the inner pocket of her blazer where her mother’s heavy steel shears rested against her chest.

She remembered the rule her mother had taught her in that cramped Cleveland apartment over twenty years ago:

A stitch hidden on the inside matters just as much as one everyone can see.

For four years, she had let someone else wear her name on the outside while she did the invisible work in the dark.

May you like

Never again.

As the cameras flashed blindingly around her and the crowd roared its approval, Evelyn Hart raised her chin, looked straight into the lenses of the global press, and smiled—not as a victim, not as a corporate wife, but as the true queen of her own empire.
