Chapter 7 - The Unmasking

She was wearing the same sharp charcoal pantsuit she had worn in New Orleans, her posture immaculate, her head held high. She didn't look like the woman who had been pushed down a flight of marble stairs three weeks ago. She looked like the sole owner of a billion-dollar empire.

Adrian stared at her as if he were looking at a ghost returned from the grave.

“Evelyn…” he breathed, his voice cracking horribly. “You… where have you been? What is this?”

“This is the bill, Adrian,” Evelyn said, stopping six feet away from him, her voice entirely calm, devoid of anger or bitterness. Just cold, clinical clarity.

Sloane stepped forward, her voice rising in frantic hysteria. “You can’t do this! Those designs belong to Mercer Holdings! I have my name on the creative directory filings!”

Evelyn turned her head slowly, looking at Sloane the way a scientist might examine a particularly dull specimen under a microscope.

“You have your name on stolen property, Ms. Whitmore,” Evelyn said coldly. “Every sketch, every stitch pattern, every design specification in the Mercer Renewal catalog was registered under my personal copyright through an independent holding corporation three years ago—before I ever married Adrian.”

She reached into her briefcase and pulled out a single sheet of heavy legal paper, stamped with federal notary seals.

“And thanks to the hard drives recovered from your personal laptop and Adrian’s private safe,” Evelyn continued, glancing toward Dominic, “we also have the complete paper trail of your digital corporate espionage, your collusion with municipal zoning boards, and the offshore wire transfers used to fund your little apartment in La Jolla.”

Adrian lunged forward across the desk, his face twisted in desperate rage. “You bitch! You planned this! You set us up!”

Before Adrian could take another step, one of the U.S. Marshals stepped forward with lightning speed, pinning Adrian’s arms behind his back and snapping cold steel handcuffs around his wrists with a sharp, metallic click.

“Adrian Mercer,” the marshal announced formally. “You are under arrest for federal wire fraud, conspiracy, extortion, and interstate intellectual property theft.”

Sloane let out a loud, shuddering gasp, sinking to her knees against the quartz base of the desk as two federal agents moved in to secure her as well.

Adrian thrashed against the handcuffs, his eyes wide and bloodshot as he stared at Evelyn with pure, unadulterated venom.

“You think you’ve won?” Adrian screamed as they dragged him toward the private elevator. “You’re nothing without my name! You’re just a tailor’s daughter from Ohio!”

May you like

Evelyn didn't blink. She watched him with absolute indifference as the elevator doors slid open and swallowed him whole.

“My mother was a master tailor, Adrian,” Evelyn said softly to the empty air. “And she taught me how to spot a loose thread before it ever starts to unravel.”
