Chapter 3 - THE BLOOD IN THE FOUNDATION

By 3:00 AM, the storm outside the Rossi mansion had intensified, driving thick layers of snow against the high mountain pass. Inside the secondary command center, four of Adrian’s top intelligence analysts were working silently alongside Leo, deciphering the massive mountain of encrypted data stolen from Croft’s private servers.

Adrian stood behind them, a cup of bitter black coffee untouched in his hand.

“Boss,” Leo called out, pointing to a complex financial flow chart glowing brightly on the main wall monitor. “We found the link.”

Adrian stepped closer, his eyes scanning the lines of offshore shell corporations connecting Manhattan real estate to banking hubs in Zurich, Cyprus, and Moscow.

“Explain it,” Adrian commanded.

“Arthur Harrington built his real estate empire on cheap land acquisitions along the waterfront,” Leo explained, tapping his stylus on the screen. “But five years ago, his company ran into a massive liquidity crisis. They were three days away from bankruptcy. Enter Dmitry Volkov—the head of the Volkov syndicate in Brooklyn.”

“Volkov supplied the liquid cash to bail Arthur out,” Adrian said, understanding the pattern instantly.

“Precisely,” Leo nodded. “In exchange, Volkov wanted a clean pipeline to launder the proceeds of his international arms trades and drug operations. But Arthur didn't want his own name tied to the cartel funds. So his son, Julian Harrington, devised a brilliant, sociopathic solution.”

Leo zoomed in on a specific block of shares labeled The Eleanor Hastings Trust.

“They used the shares belonging to Amelia’s late mother,” Leo continued, his voice cold with disgust. “Because Eleanor had been disconnected from the family for decades, her trust fund was completely unmonitored by corporate auditors. Julian appointed himself as the sole trustee of Amelia’s assets, forged her signature on twenty-seven secondary corporate charters, and used her equity as collateral to borrow money from Volkov shell banks.”

Adrian’s jaw tightened. “And Sebastian Croft was brought in to manage the technical transfers.”

“Croft was the financial architect,” Leo agreed. “He was brought into the firm specifically to oversee the laundering pipeline. But to keep the scam permanent, Croft needed absolute, total control over Amelia. If she ever discovered her name was on those bank accounts, or if she ever tried to sell her shares when she turned twenty-five, the whole illusion would shatter.”

“So Croft made her his personal prisoner,” Adrian said, his voice dropping into a deadly whisper. “He systematically broke her spirit so she would never look at a bank statement, never hire a lawyer, and never leave his sight.”

“And if she ever tried to run,” Leo added grimly, “they had a contingency plan. Julian filed secret corporate affidavits three months ago declaring Amelia mentally unfit due to trauma. If she ever went to the police, they would have had her committed to a private psychiatric facility owned by a Harrington subsidiary.”

Adrian set his coffee cup down on the desk with a heavy snap. The porcelain cracked down the center, dark liquid leaking across the polished mahogany.

He thought of the gentle, terrified woman sleeping down the hall—a woman who had spent years blaming herself for her own physical suffering, completely unaware that she was the central, sacrificed pillar of a billion-dollar criminal empire.

“Where is Volkov right now?” Adrian asked.

“Dmitry Volkov flew into New York yesterday afternoon for the wedding,” Leo reported. “He’s currently staying at the St. Regis, surrounded by twelve heavily armed bodyguards. He expects the final merger papers to be signed at a private victory dinner tomorrow night at Arthur Harrington’s private estate in Long Island.”

“Is Croft going to be there?”

“Yes. Along with Arthur, Julian, and Penelope.”

Adrian turned away from the wall monitor, his gray eyes flashing with an incandescent, terrifying intelligence.

“Leo,” Adrian spoke softly.

“Yes, boss?”

“I want our entire tactical unit assembled by sunrise. Tell Dominic to mobilize our dock workers in Brooklyn and shut down every Volkov shipping container sitting at Pier 42. Cut off their liquidity by morning.”

Leo smiled a dark, predatory smile. “And what about the Harrington family?”

“We’re going to give them a wedding present they’ll never forget,” Adrian said. “Call Dr. Harrison. I want Amelia fully evaluated and prepped. She’s going to make a personal appearance at her cousin’s victory dinner.”
