Chapter 7 - THE RECKONING AT PIER 42

The chaos inside the Harrington mansion dissolved rapidly as federal agents flooded the property, placing Arthur, Julian, and several corrupt executives in heavy steel handcuffs.

Outside, in the cold winter air near the fountain, Dmitry Volkov stood surrounded by his six bodyguards, watching his former business partners being loaded into black federal sedans.

Adrian Rossi walked out onto the marble terrace, holding a heavy wool coat over his arm. Amelia walked beside him, wrapped snugly in a warm cashmere cloak.

Volkov turned to face Adrian, his expression dark and analytical.

“You set this up, Adrian,” Volkov said quietly. “You handed the federal prosecutors the encrypted ledger keys.”

“I gave them Croft’s private server files,” Adrian admitted freely. “The FBI gets three high-profile Wall Street convictions, and in exchange, they leave my shipping terminals alone.”

Volkov stepped closer, his dark eyes shifting to Amelia. “And the girl? She holds the voting rights to the waterfront properties I paid forty million dollars to secure.”

“The waterfront properties are no longer for sale,” Amelia spoke up, stepping forward beside Adrian. “My mother’s trust fund was legally reclaimed an hour ago by my attorneys. The contracts Julian signed using my forged signature have been officially voided by a federal judge.”

Volkov looked at her, a faint flicker of terrifying respect passing through his dark eyes. “You have remarkably strong spirit for a woman who was hiding in a closet two days ago.”

“She has a Rossi standing beside her,” Adrian said, his voice hard as iron. “If any of your men come within five miles of her or her properties, Dmitry, I will take it as a personal declaration of war against my entire family.”

Volkov stared at Adrian for three long seconds, calculating the immense financial and physical cost of engaging in a full-scale syndicate war against the Rossi empire.

Slowly, Volkov gave a single, curt nod. “The Harrington deal is dead. I take my business back to Europe. Good night, Adrian.”

Volkov turned on his heel and walked toward his armored SUV, his guards falling into formation behind him, vanishing into the night.

The driveway cleared out as the remaining federal vehicles drove away, leaving only Adrian’s fleet of black sedans idling near the fountain.

Leo walked over to Adrian, handing him a secure tablet. “Boss, the federal agents just processed Sebastian Croft at the downtown holding facility. He tried to post bail using his overseas accounts, but the judge froze every single one of his assets. He’s going away for at least twenty-five years.”

Adrian took the tablet, reviewed the confirmation report, and handed it back. “Ensure he gets placed in maximum security. I don't want him having access to a phone.”

“Understood, boss,” Leo said, bowing his head before walking back to the secondary car.

Amelia stood on the terrace, watching the falling snow dust the marble statues of the estate that had been her prison for eight long years. She felt no lingering anger, no bitter desire for revenge—only an overwhelming, weightless sense of absolute freedom.

She turned to face Adrian.

He was watching her quietly, his gray eyes soft in the dim light of the snow. He unfolded the heavy wool coat he carried and gently placed it around her shoulders, holding the collar together near her neck to keep out the cold wind.

“It’s over, Amelia,” Adrian whispered softly. “They can never hurt you again.”

Tears welled up in Amelia’s eyes—not tears of fear or shame, but tears of profound relief. She leaned forward, placing her head gently against his broad chest.

Adrian wrapped his powerful arms around her, holding her tightly against his body, sheltering her completely from the bitter winter cold.
