Chapter 5 - THE LONG ISLAND FORTRESS

The Harrington estate in Southampton, Long Island, was an imposing monument to unbridled wealth and arrogance. Surrounded by ten-foot stone walls, wrought-iron gates, and manicured hedges, the neo-classical mansion blazed with lights against the dark winter sky.

Dozens of high-end luxury vehicles lined the sweeping gravel driveway. Inside the grand ballroom, classical music played softly as sixty of New York’s most influential elite—politicians, judges, Wall Street executives, and high-society heiresses—sipped vintage champagne under massive crystal chandeliers.

In the center of the room stood Arthur Harrington, looking distinguished in a classic tuxedo, holding court with a group of offshore investors. Beside him stood his son, Julian Harrington, looking polished, handsome, and entirely relaxed.

Near the grand fireplace stood Sebastian Croft. He wore a crisp Tom Ford tuxedo, a dazzling smile fixed on his face as he accepted congratulations from guests on his upcoming merger. But behind his charming eyes, a dark, desperate agitation was boiling beneath the surface.

Sebastian stepped away from a group of investors and walked quickly into the private library adjoining the ballroom.

Julian Harrington followed him inside, closing the heavy oak doors behind them.

“Have your men found her yet?” Julian demanded in a low, furious whisper, grabbing a glass of scotch from the sideboard.

“Not yet,” Sebastian hissed, running a hand through his styled hair. “She didn't use her credit cards, and her burner phone hasn't hit any cell towers since last night. My men checked the Port Authority terminal—she never boarded the bus.”

“You idiot!” Julian spat, leaning in close. “She has her mother’s trust fund documentation in her head! If she goes to the SEC or the federal prosecutor’s office before we sign the Volkov transfer papers tonight, my father and I are completely finished!”

“She’s not going to the police!” Sebastian snapped back defensively. “She’s terrified of me! She’s probably hiding in some filthy motel in Queens, crying her eyes out! As soon as this party is over, I’ll take four men and sweep every low-rent housing district in the city. I’ll find her.”

“Make sure you do,” Julian warned coldly. “Dmitry Volkov is upstairs right now reviewing the final contract. If he finds out the primary shareholder of the collateral equity is missing, he’ll blow both our heads off before midnight.”

At that exact moment, the heavy double doors of the grand ballroom outside swung open with a dramatic, thunderous impact.

The classical string quartet abruptly stopped playing. The low murmur of wealthy chatter died down completely, replaced by a sudden, collective gasp from sixty high-society guests.

Sebastian and Julian stepped out of the library instantly to see what had disrupted the event.

Standing in the grand entrance archway of the ballroom was Adrian Rossi.

He looked formidable, imposing, and overwhelmingly powerful in a tailored black tuxedo, flanked by four towering bodyguards dressed in sleek dark suits. But it was not Adrian who had silenced the entire room.

Arm-in-arm with Adrian stood Amelia Hastings.

She looked breathtaking. The midnight-blue velvet gown hugged her slender frame with absolute perfection, the high collar framed by the glittering, multi-million-dollar Rossi platinum diamond necklace. Her long brown hair was styled in elegant, sweeping waves, her makeup flawless, highlighting her delicate cheekbones and radiant green eyes.

There was no fear in her posture. No trembling in her hands. She held her head high, her gaze sweeping across the room with a calm, regal authority that left every person in the room spellbound.

Sebastian Croft felt his heart stop dead in his chest. His glass of scotch slipped from his fingers, shattering loudly against the marble floor, amber liquor splashing over his polished shoes.

Julian Harrington turned pale as a corpse, staggering backward a step, his eyes wide with absolute disbelief.

Arthur Harrington pushed his way through the crowd of frozen guests, his face flushed with deep anger and confusion.

“What is the meaning of this?” Arthur demanded loudly, stepping toward the entrance. “Rossi! How dare you walk into my private home uninvited! And Amelia—what on earth are you doing with this man?”

Adrian Rossi didn't answer Arthur. He turned his head slowly, looking down at Amelia with a soft, protective smile.

“Are you ready, sweetheart?” Adrian asked softly, his deep voice carrying clearly through the silent ballroom.

May you like

Amelia looked at Arthur, then her eyes moved across the room, locking directly onto Sebastian Croft’s frozen, terrified face.

“I’m ready,” Amelia said, her voice clear, strong, and completely unwavering.
