Chapter 5 - The Unspoken Bond

Three days passed inside the warm, luxurious walls of the Russo estate.
For Chloe, those three days felt like stepping into an entirely different universe. Her brother, Tommy, was installed in a sunlit second-floor suite equipped with state-of-the-art medical equipment, overseen twenty-four hours a day by Dr. Michael Chen—Chicago’s top nephrologist, whom Victor had put on a permanent personal retainer.
For the first time in two years, Tommy’s cheeks had regained a healthy pink color. His appetite had returned, and he spent his afternoons watching movies on a massive television screen while eating fresh meals prepared by the estate's private Italian chefs.
Chloe’s fever had finally broken, thanks to the round-the-clock care and rest Victor insisted she receive. She was given a beautiful guest bedroom right across the hall from her brother, stocked with soft cashmere sweaters, silk dresses, and warm wool coats—all tailored precisely to her measurements, delivered without a word of explanation.
Yet, despite the sudden luxury, Chloe refused to sit idle.
On the fourth morning, unable to bear the feeling of being a helpless burden, Chloe walked down to the estate's vast, stainless-steel kitchen at six o'clock in the morning.
The head house cook, a kindly, plump Italian woman named Mrs. Fiore, was busy preparing fresh espresso and breakfast pastries for the estate guards.
“Miss Chloe!” Mrs. Fiore gasped, dropping her wooden spoon in surprise. “What are you doing down here? Don Russo explicitly ordered that you are to remain in bed resting!”
“I’m completely healed, Mrs. Fiore,” Chloe smiled warmly, rolling up the sleeves of her soft cream sweater. “And I can't just sit in that room all day doing nothing. Please... let me help. I used to work at an Italian bakery in the West Loop. I know how to make authentic cannoli and fresh ciabatta.”
Mrs. Fiore looked at Chloe’s earnest, gentle eyes and smiled softly. “Ah, child. You have a good heart. Very well... show me your dough technique.”
For two hours, the kitchen was filled with the warm, comforting smell of fresh yeast, roasted espresso beans, and melting dark chocolate. Chloe worked happily, her hands covered in flour, her dark hair pinned up loosely as she shaped fresh pastries with expert precision.
At eight o'clock, the heavy kitchen doors swung open.
Victor stepped into the room, dressed in a sharp charcoal suit, his morning papers tucked beneath his arm. He froze at the entrance, his grey eyes locking onto Chloe.
She was standing by the center marble island, a smudge of white flour resting on the tip of her cute button nose, her face glowing with life, health, and a genuine smile that made his breath catch in his chest.
Mrs. Fiore quickly bowed her head. “Good morning, Don Russo. Miss Chloe insisted on helping with breakfast.”
Victor slowly walked across the kitchen floor, his eyes never leaving Chloe. The intimidating aura he usually projected seemed to soften completely in her presence.
He stopped at the marble island, reaching out with a long, clean finger to gently wipe the smudge of flour off her nose.
“You are supposed to be resting, Miss Bennett,” Victor murmured, his voice rich and deep, sending a warm shiver straight down her spine.
“I’m completely rested, Mr. Russo,” Chloe replied softly, looking up into his dark, mesmerizing eyes. She picked up a small porcelain plate holding a warm, perfectly dusted chocolate cannoli and offered it to him. “I made these for you. As a small thank you... for everything you’ve done for Tommy.”
Victor looked at the pastry, then at her hopeful face.
For five years, Victor had refused to touch any food or drink that hadn't been rigorously tested for poison by his personal security detail. It was a paranoid habit born from the betrayal that had killed his brother.
Standing behind Victor in the doorway, Marco Rossi watched intently, waiting for his boss to reject the maid’s food and enforce protocol.
Victor reached out. Without a second of hesitation, without calling a guard to test it, he took the cannoli from Chloe’s hand and took a bite.
Mrs. Fiore gasped softly in delight. Marco’s jaw tightened in fury from the doorway.
Victor chewed slowly, his eyes closing for a brief second as the incredible taste of crisp pastry and rich chocolate cream filled his senses. He opened his eyes, looking directly at Chloe.
“It’s exceptional,” Victor said quietly, a faint, rare smile playing at the corners of his handsome mouth. “The best I’ve ever had.”
Chloe blushed deeply, her heart performing a strange, joyful flutter inside her chest. “I’m glad you like it, sir.”
“Victor,” he corrected gently, stepping closer to her. “When we are in this house... call me Victor.”
Chloe’s breath hitched. “Victor...”

Before another word could be spoken, Marco stepped sharply into the kitchen, his heavy boots clicking loudly against the tile floor.
“Victor, we have an emergency,” Marco interrupted coldly, glaring at Chloe with deep contempt. “The Commission has summoned an immediate meeting at the Drake Hotel. Don Saleri brought elders from New York. They are demanding you hand over the girl and her brother as restitution for the incident in Pilsen... or prepare for an all-out syndicate war.”
