Chapter 9 - The Serpent Unmasked

The grand ballroom descended into absolute, terrifying chaos.

Gasping and screams echoed through the crowd as several high-ranking capos instantly drew their weapons, stepping back toward the walls.

Victor stood frozen in the center of the floor, his brain processing the nightmare unfolding before his eyes. He looked from the weeping, broken form of Elena to his lifelong second-in-command, Marco Rossi.

Marco stood by the balcony doors. His face had gone completely pale, but his eyes were filled with a wild, cornered fury.

“She’s lying!” Marco roared, drawing his weapon from his coat and aiming it directly at Elena’s head. “She’s a traitor! Guards, shoot her!”

“STAY WHERE YOU ARE!” Victor barked, his voice carrying such raw, apocalyptic force that every guard in the room froze in their tracks.

Victor stepped forward, his body shielding both Chloe and Elena. His slate-grey eyes locked onto Marco, burning with a lethal fire that made the temperature in the ballroom drop below zero.

“Put the gun down, Marco,” Victor said softly, his voice trembling with a terrifying, subterranean rage.

“Victor, listen to me!” Marco pleaded, his hand shaking as he kept his gun raised. “She’s working with Saleri! She came here to destroy your engagement! I’ve been loyal to you for fifteen years!”

“If you were loyal,” a clear, confident voice spoke up from behind Victor, “then why did you transfer two million dollars from the family’s offshore Cayman accounts into a private Swiss bank three hours ago?”

Every head snapped toward Chloe.

Chloe stepped forward from behind Victor, holding her smartphone high in her hand. Her dark eyes were steady, filled with absolute courage and intelligence.

“While I was in Mrs. Fiore’s kitchen yesterday,” Chloe announced, her voice echoing clearly off the high marble walls, “I overheard Marco talking on his encrypted radio to Don Saleri’s top lawyer. He was arranging a private handover of the Russo family's North Side shipping schedules in exchange for five million dollars.”

Chloe tapped her phone screen, pressing play on a loud speaker setting.

Marco’s distinct, gravelly voice blasted clearly through the ballroom speakers:

“...The engagement party is tomorrow night. Once Victor announces the maid as his fiancée, the family capos will be divided. That’s when Saleri’s men strike the docks. Make sure the five million is in my Zurich account by midnight...”

The recording cut off.

Silence—dead, suffocating silence—fell over the two hundred guests in the ballroom.

The senior capos of the Russo family looked at Marco with pure, unadulterated hatred.

Marco stared at Chloe in utter disbelief, his jaw trembling. “You... you filthy little maid...”

“You framed an innocent woman five years ago,” Chloe said, her voice strong and unwavering as she stood proudly beside Victor. “And you got Victor’s younger brother killed just to satisfy your own greed. You are the traitor in this house, Marco. Not me.”

Marco lost his mind entirely. With a wild, desperate scream, he swung his gun away from Elena and aimed it straight at Chloe’s chest—

BLAM!

A single, deafening gunshot echoed through the grand ballroom.

Before Marco could pull his trigger, Victor had drawn his custom Sig Sauer and fired a single bullet straight through Marco’s right shoulder.

Marco shrieked in agony, dropping his weapon as he collapsed onto his knees on the marble floor, blood spattering across his expensive tuxedo.

Victor didn't fire a second shot. He walked slowly across the dance floor, his face a terrifying mask of cold death.

He stood over his bleeding second-in-command, kicking Marco’s gun far across the floor.

“Fifteen years, Marco,” Victor whispered, his deep voice shaking with profound betrayal. “My brother died because of you.”

“Victor... please...” Marco wept, clutching his bloody shoulder, looking up at his Don in sheer terror. “I’m sorry... please...”

Victor turned to his four most trusted senior capos.

“Take him to the basement,” Victor ordered coldly, his voice devoid of all human mercy. “Do not let him die until he answers every question about Leo’s death.”

The capos grabbed Marco by his arms, dragging the screaming, weeping traitor out of the ballroom.

Victor turned to his guards. “Get Elena to our medical team. Ensure she receives full care and security.”

With the traitor removed, the grand ballroom was quiet once again.

Victor turned around, his eyes finding Chloe standing proudly by the center floor. He walked up to her, dropping his gun back into his holster, taking both of her soft, warm hands into his.

In front of two hundred stunned, awed guests, Victor dropped to one knee on the marble floor before her.

He looked up into her dark, beautiful eyes, his face filled with an eternal, unyielding reverence.

“You saved my life tonight, Chloe,” Victor whispered, his voice thick with emotion. “You saved my family. You saved my soul.”

Chloe smiled, tears of pure happiness streaming down her face as she reached down, taking his face into her hands.

“I love you, Victor,” she whispered softly.

Victor stood up, pulling her small body flush against his broad chest, placing his hand behind her neck, and kissed her with a fierce, burning passion that shattered the last remaining shadows of his dark past forever.

The entire ballroom erupted into thunderous, overwhelming applause.
