Chapter 8 - The Engagement Gala

The grand ballroom of the Russo estate was a sea of glittering crystal, dark velvet, and dangerous power.

Over two hundred guests filled the room—senior capos, corrupt politicians, high-ranking syndicate leaders, and wealthy socialites from across the Midwest.

However, beneath the classical violin music and flowing champagne, the room was buzzing with a vicious, toxic cloud of judgment and malice.

Near the grand bar, three high-society women—wives of powerful North Side syndicate capos—were sipping champagne, their eyes fixed on the grand double staircase.

“It’s an absolute outrage,” one woman sneered, turning her diamond-encrusted fan. “Victor Russo could have married any woman in New York or Chicago. Instead, he elevates a filthy maid who spent her mornings scrubbing floors in Pilsen.”

“She probably tricked him,” another whispered venomously. “A girl like that knows exactly how to use her body to trap a rich man. She’ll ruin the Russo family within a year.”

Standing in the shadows near the balcony, Marco Rossi listened to the poisonous chatter, a dark, dangerous smile touching his lips. He checked his gold pocket watch. It was almost nine o'clock—the moment the formal announcement was scheduled to take place.

TRUMPETS SOUNDED FROM THE UPPER BALCONY.

The heavy double doors at the top of the grand staircase swung open.

The entire ballroom fell into a dead, suffocating silence. Two hundred heads snapped toward the staircase.

Victor Russo stepped out into the light.

He looked like an absolute monarch, dressed in an immaculate black velvet tuxedo, his broad shoulders squared, his grey eyes sweeping over the crowd with cold authority.

And standing beside him, her hand tucked securely into the crook of his arm, was Chloe Bennett.

A collective, audible gasp echoed across the grand hall.

Chloe was a vision of breathtaking, magnificent beauty. She wore a custom-designed gown of dark emerald velvet that clung elegantly to her slender waist, flowing down into a magnificent train. Her dark, wavy hair was pinned up in a regal crown, locked in place by a tiara of diamonds, and on her finger, sparkling like a star under the chandeliers, sat the five-carat diamond ring.

She did not look like a maid. She looked like a Queen.

Victor guided her down the marble staircase, his hand resting possessively over hers, keeping her close to his side as they stepped onto the main floor.

The crowd instinctively parted, creating a wide path for them.

Victor stopped in the center of the ballroom, taking a glass of champagne from a passing butler. He raised his glass, his deep, commanding voice filling every corner of the vast room.

“Welcome, friends and allies,” Victor announced, his slate-grey eyes scanning the frozen crowd. “Tonight, I share with you the greatest honor of my life. I introduce to you my fiancée, Chloe Bennett—the future Donna of the Russo Syndicate.”

The senior capos in the front row quickly clapped, followed by the rest of the room, though the applause was filled with underlying tension and forced smiles.

Victor turned to Chloe, his expression softening into pure warmth. He leaned down, placing a tender, passionate kiss against her lips in front of the entire city.

Chloe smiled up at him, her heart soaring with happiness, completely forgetting the hostility of the crowd.

Suddenly, a loud, crashing sound shattered the romantic moment.

GLASS SMASHED AGAINST THE MARBLE FLOOR.

At the side entrance of the ballroom, a disheveled, wild-eyed woman in a torn silk dress was being shoved into the room by three security guards.

It was Elena Vance—the woman who had betrayed Victor five years ago, the woman everyone believed had died in Europe.

The entire ballroom gasped in sheer, violent shock.

“Victor!” Elena screamed out, her voice hysterical as she fought against the guards' grip. “Victor, help me! They lied to you! I never betrayed you five years ago! It was a setup!”

Victor’s face went completely dead white.

He instinctively stepped in front of Chloe, his hand dropping to his suit jacket, his eyes wide with a mixture of shock, rage, and ancient trauma.

Elena broke free from the guard's grip, staggering onto the center floor, pointing a trembling, bloody finger straight at Marco Rossi.

“It was Marco!” Elena shrieked, tears streaming down her face. “Marco sold your travel routes five years ago! He framed me so he could take control of your financial accounts! And he’s doing it again with Chloe!”
