Chapter 4 - The Breach

The attack did not begin with gunfire or dramatic explosions. It began with quiet, deadly betrayal from within.

At two o'clock in the afternoon, Thomas—a junior security guard who had worked the rear perimeter gate for less than six months—silently disabled the motion sensors along the estate's eastern fence line. Thomas had built up a mountain of gambling debts with Frankie Torrio’s crew in Cicero, and his life had been offered back to him in exchange for five minutes of blind eyes.

Through the disabled sector slipped six heavily armed men clad in tactical winter gear, led by Frankie "The Blade" Torrio himself. They moved like shadows through the dense pine forest, bypassing the primary security patrols who were focused entirely on the main front gates.

Inside the basement apartment, Sophia was folding laundry while music played softly from a small battery-powered radio on the counter. Emma was sitting on the rug, coloring in a picture book with a box of bright crayons, while Bruno lay stretched out beside her, snoring gently.

Suddenly, Bruno’s ears twitched. His head snapped up from the floor, his eyes instantly turning sharp and amber in the dim light.

Sophia looked over at the dog. "What is it, Bruno?"

Bruno didn't answer with his usual lazy huff. He stood up slowly, his body stiffening into a terrifying combat posture. Every hair along his broad spine stood on end. A low, guttural growl began to build deep within his chest—a sound so dark and menacing that Sophia immediately dropped the towel she was holding.

"Emma, come here," Sophia whispered, her instincts screaming that something was terribly wrong.

"Mommy?" Emma blinked, sensing her mother's sudden terror.

Before Sophia could reach her daughter, the small basement window near the ceiling shattered in a rain of sharp glass.

A flashbang grenade dropped through the broken pane, bouncing across the floor tiles.

BANG!

A blinding flash of white light and a deafening explosion ripped through the small kitchen. Sophia screamed, thrown backward against the wall by the shockwave, her ears ringing violently, her vision swimming in white spots.

"EMMA!" she shrieked through the haze.

The heavy wooden apartment door was kicked inward with immense force, splintering off its hinges. Frankie Torrio and three masked men poured into the room, their suppressed submachine guns raised.

"Grab the kid! Fast!" Frankie roared over the ringing echo.

One of the masked men lunged toward Emma, who was huddled under the small dining table, crying in absolute terror.

He never touched her.

Out of the smoke and dust came a hundred and forty pounds of black fury.

Bruno launched himself through the air like a cannonball, his jaw snapping shut with bone-crushing force directly around the lead attacker's throat. The man let out a choked, horrific scream as Bruno slammed him into the concrete wall, tearing through kevlar and flesh with terrifying, primal rage.

"Shoot the dog! Shoot the damn dog!" Frankie screamed, backing away in terror.

Another attacker raised his weapon and fired three rapid shots point-blank into Bruno’s flank.

THWIP! THWIP! THWIP!

Bruno roared in pain, blood spraying across the white walls, but the legendary war-dog refused to drop. Driven by a desperate, unbreakable instinct to protect his little girl, Bruno turned on the second man, biting deep into his shoulder and dragging him down into a pool of shattered glass.

"Mommy!" Emma screamed from beneath the table.

Sophia, regaining her senses through sheer maternal adrenaline, grabbed a heavy cast-iron skillet from the stove and charged at Frankie Torrio, smashing it against the side of his head with all her strength.

Frankie cursed violently, staggering sideways, but he turned and struck Sophia hard across the face with the butt of his pistol. Sophia crashed to the floor, her lip splitting open, her vision fading into darkness as blood trickled down her forehead.

"Get the child! Leave the dog!" Frankie yelled, bleeding from his ear.

The third attacker managed to dodge Bruno's lunges, reaching under the table and grabbing Emma by the back of her coat. He yanked her out, pinning her small arms to her sides while she kicked and screamed desperately.

"BRUNO! MOMMY! HELP!" Emma sobbed hysterically.

Bruno, bleeding heavily from three gunshot wounds in his side and his ancient, shattered hip collapsing beneath him, crawled forward across the slick floor, dragging his limp hind legs behind him. He snapped savagely at the man's boots, his teeth missing by inches as his strength rapidly ebbed away.

The attacker kicked Bruno squarely in his injured snout, sending the old dog rolling back against the wall.

"We got her! Move! Move!" Frankie ordered, grabbing the sobbing child and sprinting out through the splintered doorway into the snowy hallway.

Outside, the estate's main alarm system finally detonated into a screaming frenzy of sirens. Gunfire erupted in the distant courtyard as Marco and the remaining Moretti guards realized the perimeter had been breached and engaged the getaway team near the fence line.

In the shattered basement apartment, total, suffocating silence returned.

Sophia lay unconscious on the cold tiles, her forehead bleeding onto the floor.

Beside her, Bruno lay pooling in his own crimson blood. His breathing was shallow, heavy, and ragged. His body was broken, his old wounds torn open, his energy completely spent.

Slowly, agonizingly, the old dog dragged himself across the floor, inch by painful inch, until he reached the spot beneath the table where Emma had been sitting moments before.

There, lying in the dust, was Emma's little painted wooden horse and her cream-colored teddy bear, Mr. Buttons.

Bruno opened his bloody jaws, gently lifted the small stuffed bear between his teeth, and laid his heavy, battered head down upon the floorboards, closing his yellow eyes as the sirens blared endlessly into the freezing winter sky.
