Chapter 7 - The Empire Falls

The steel side doors of the meatpacking warehouse were blown inward with explosive breaching charges, sending heavy metal fragments and blinding smoke pouring into the interior corridor.
BOOM!
Before the smoke could clear, Alessandro's strike team poured through the opening, thermal vision goggles glowing green in the darkness.
"Contact left!" an attacker screamed from behind a stack of wooden crates, firing a wildly spraying burst of automatic fire into the entryway.
Alessandro didn't even flinch. He stepped through the smoke, raised his heavy pistol, and fired three precise shots. The attacker collapsed backward into the darkness, his weapon clattering across the concrete floor.
Beside him, Bruno charged forward like a black demon born of the storm. Despite his heavy bandages and severe injuries, the giant dog moved with terrifying speed through the shadows, ignoring the pain in his shattered hip.
He located an attacker hiding behind a steel pillar, lunged through the darkness, and clamped his jaw around the man's thigh, dragging him screaming into the open light where a Moretti operative neutralized him instantly.
"Clear!" Marco shouted, stepping over a fallen guard. "First floor secure!"
Alessandro moved deeper into the facility, his senses hyper-tuned to every sound. High above in the rafters, he heard a small, terrified, unmistakable voice crying out over the din of battle.
"MR. BOSS MAN! BRUNO!"
Alessandro's head snapped up toward the second-floor catwalks. "EMMA!"
On the steel gantry twenty feet above the main floor, Frankie Torrio was dragging the crying child toward a rear fire escape, holding a chrome revolver pressed tightly against her small head. His face was covered in sweat and blood, his eyes wide with absolute, unhinged insanity.
"STAY BACK!" Frankie screamed hysterically into the darkness, stepping toward the edge of the railing. "STAY BACK OR I BLOW HER BRAINS OUT RIGHT NOW! I SWEAR TO GOD I'LL DO IT!"
The entire assault force froze. Forty rifles were instantly lowered as the operatives looked to Alessandro for orders.
Alessandro stepped into the center of the open warehouse floor, standing directly beneath the spotlight shining down from the rafters. He lowered his pistol to his side, his face completely devoid of fear, anger, or emotion. It was the face of absolute death.
"Frankie," Alessandro said, his voice carrying clearly through the vast, echoing space. "Look at me."
Frankie, trembling violently, looked down over the railing at the crime lord standing below. "You lose, Moretti! You hear me?! You lose! I take one step off this balcony and I take the kid with me!"
"You have five seconds to remove your hand from that child," Alessandro said calmly, his tone as casual as if discussing the weather.
"Or what?!" Frankie shrieked. "You gonna shoot me?! You miss by an inch and I pull this trigger!"
"I won't miss," Alessandro replied softly. "Because I'm not the one who is going to take you down."
Alessandro looked down at his side. "Bruno. Up."
Bruno, standing beside Alessandro, raised his massive, bloody head. His yellow eyes locked directly onto Frankie Torrio standing on the upper catwalk.
A terrifying, high-pitched whine escaped the dog's throat—not of pain, but of pure, predatory hatred.
Frankie’s eyes widened in sheer disbelief as he saw the giant, bandaged monster he had shot three times earlier that afternoon standing directly beneath him, alive and preparing to strike.
"No... no! You're dead! I shot you!" Frankie screamed, panic completely taking over his brain.
In that half-second of distraction, Frankie lowered his revolver by two inches away from Emma's head.
It was the only opening Alessandro needed.
Alessandro raised his pistol with blinding speed and fired a single shot.
THWACK!
The heavy bullet struck Frankie squarely in the wrist of his gun hand. Frankie let out a agonized shriek as his revolver was shattered into pieces, flying out of his grip and clattering down to the concrete floor below.
He stumbled backward against the guardrail, letting go of Emma's coat.
"BRUNO!" Emma screamed, slipping under the railing and sliding down the steel fire ladder into the open air.
"I got her!" Marco yelled, sprinting forward and catching the child safely in his arms before she hit the hard floor.
At the exact same moment, Bruno leaped onto an overturned forklift, sprinted up its steel boom, and launched his hundred-and-forty-pound body across a eight-foot gap directly onto the upper catwalk.
The giant dog slammed into Frankie Torrio with the force of a runaway freight train, sending both of them crashing through the rusted iron railing.
They plummeted twenty feet through the air, crashing down onto a heavy wooden pallet stacked with ice and salt below.
A sickening crunch echoed through the warehouse.
Frankie Torrio lay pinned beneath the heavy weight of the giant dog, his legs broken, screaming in agony. Bruno stood directly over his chest, his broad, blood-stained snout inches from Frankie's pale face, letting out a low, terrifying growl that rattled the man's teeth in his skull.
Alessandro walked over slowly, his boots crunching against the ice and broken wood. He stood over the defeated hitter, looking down at him with cold disdain.
"Please..." Frankie wept, his hands raised in terror. "Please, Moretti... mercy... don't let the dog eat me... please..."
Alessandro did not answer. He turned his back on Frankie, walking over to Marco, who was holding a crying, shivering Emma wrapped in his tactical jacket.
The moment Emma saw Alessandro, she reached out her small arms toward him. "Mr. Boss Man!"
Alessandro took the child into his arms, lifting her up against his chest. For the first time in his entire life, Alessandro Moretti held a child close, feeling her small, warm heart beating frantically against his ribs.
Emma buried her face in his neck, sobbing softly. "He broke my wooden horsey..."
Alessandro closed his eyes, pressing his cheek against her soft hair, feeling a tear cut a path through the gunpowder residue on his own cheek. "I will buy you a thousand wooden horses, little one," he whispered softly. "I promise you."

He looked back over his shoulder at Marco and Bruno.
"Clean up this trash," Alessandro ordered coldly, pointing at Frankie Torrio. "And bring old man Valenti to my office in chains before sunrise."
