Chapter 5 - A King's Rage

Alessandro’s convoy was twenty miles north on Interstate 94 when Marco’s emergency call breached his encrypted satellite phone.

"Boss," Marco's voice was barely audible over the sound of blaring sirens and roaring wind. "The estate was hit. They breached the west sector."

Alessandro’s entire body went deathly still. The dark air in the rear of the limousine seemed to freeze instantly. "Sophia and Emma."

There was a terrifying pause on the line. "They took the child, boss. Mrs. Carter is alive... but she’s hurt. And Bruno..."

"Turn the car around," Alessandro ordered, his voice dropping into a register so quiet, so flat, and so murderous that the veteran driver's hands instantly began to shake on the steering wheel. "Execute emergency protocol Alpha. Call every captain, every lieutenant, every soldier in the Great Lakes jurisdiction. I want Chicago completely shut down in thirty minutes."

The black armored SUV pulled an illegal U-turn across the snowy highway median, its engine roaring like a wounded beast as it sprinted back toward the city at a hundred miles an hour.

Twenty minutes later, the SUV tore through the ruined gates of the Moretti estate, spinning its tires against the blood-stained snow in the main courtyard.

Alessandro leaped out before the vehicle had even come to a complete stop, storming past paramedics, forensic teams, and heavily armed guards who lowered their eyes in absolute terror as he passed.

He descended the basement stairs three at a time.

The apartment was a warzone. Bullet holes pockmarked the plaster, blood was smeared across the yellow walls, and shattered glass covered every square inch of the floor.

In the kitchen, two paramedics were tending to Sophia, who was sitting on a chair with a thick bandage wrapped around her bleeding head. She was sobbing uncontrollably, her hands shaking violently.

When she saw Alessandro enter the room, she pushed the paramedics away and threw herself at his feet, clutching the hem of his dark coat.

"Alessandro!" she wailed, her heart breaking in a desperate storm of grief. "They took her! They took my baby! I tried to stop them, I swear I tried, but they hit me—"

Alessandro immediately dropped to his knee, wrapping his powerful arms around her shoulders and lifting her up gently. "Sophia, look at me," he commanded softly, his dark eyes burning with an intense, terrifying light. "Look at me."

Sophia looked into his eyes, seeing the absolute, unyielding promise written within them.

"I will bring your daughter back," Alessandro said, each word spoken like a sacred oath bound in blood. "I will bring her back to you untouched, or I will burn this entire city to ash. Do you hear me?"

Sophia nodded frantically, tears streaming down her bruised face. "Please... please find my little girl..."

Alessandro turned his gaze to the far corner of the room.

Dr. Richard Hale was kneeling over Bruno’s motionless body, his hands covered in dark blood as he worked desperately to stop the bleeding from three gunshot wounds in the dog's chest and flank.

Alessandro walked over and knelt beside his old comrade.

"Is he alive?" Alessandro asked, his voice cracking slightly.

"Barely," Richard gasped, wiping sweat and tears from his eyes. "He lost a massive amount of blood, Alessandro. One bullet collapsed his left lung. Another shattered his bad hip completely. He should be dead... he should be dead."

Alessandro looked down at Bruno’s face.

The old war-dog’s eyes were half-open, clouded with pain and approaching death. But tucked firmly between his jaws, protected from the blood and dirt, was Emma's small teddy bear, Mr. Buttons.

Even in the black depths of dying, Bruno refused to let go of his little girl's bear.

Alessandro laid his large hand over Bruno's cold, scarred forehead. "You held the line, my old friend," he whispered softly, his throat tight with uncharacteristic emotion. "You fought like a king. Now let me finish it."

As if hearing his master's voice, Bruno let out a long, shuddering sigh, his tail twitching once against the cold floor tiles.

"Get him to the surgical suite in the main house," Alessandro ordered Richard, standing up to his full, towering height. "If he dies, Richard, I will hold you personally accountable."

"I'll do everything I can, boss," Richard promised, calling for two guards to help lift the massive, heavy dog onto a stretcher.

Alessandro walked back out into the central corridor, where Marco stood surrounded by thirty top lieutenants—men who controlled gambling dens, docks, union halls, and armed enforcement crews across four states.

"Who did this?" Alessandro asked softly.

Marco held up a broken tactical radio recovered from one of the dead attackers in the garden. "Frankie Torrio. He was operating under direct orders from old man Valenti."

A collective murmur went through the assembled captains. Hitting a maid and child was a violation of every unwritten rule of the Chicago underworld. It was an act of total, barbaric desperation.

Alessandro reached into his inner coat pocket, pulled out his personal gold signet ring, and tossed it onto the marble table in the hallway.

"Effective immediately," Alessandro declared, his voice echoing off the stone walls like thunder, "the Valenti syndicate no longer exists. I am putting a five-million-dollar bounty on Frankie Torrio's head, alive or dead. I want every business, every warehouse, every safehouse owned by Valenti burned to the ground before midnight."

He looked at Marco. "Shut down the ports. Block every interstate heading out of Illinois. Tell the union bosses that not a single truck moves in Chicago until my child is back in this house."

May you like

"Your child, boss?" one of the older captains asked, surprised.

Alessandro looked the captain straight in the eye, his gaze cold enough to kill. "She is my daughter now. And anyone who touched her dies tonight."
