Chapter 8 - A New Kingdom

Six months later.

The early June sun shone brightly over the lush, green rolling hills of the Moretti estate, illuminating a landscape that had been entirely transformed.

The high concrete perimeter walls and cold iron guard towers remained, but the oppressive, dark atmosphere that had ruled the property for two decades was completely gone. The frosted stone courtyard was now lined with vibrant flower beds filled with red roses, yellow tulips, and sweet-smelling lavender.

In the center of the lawn, four-year-old Emma was running through the cool spray of a garden sprinkler, wearing a bright yellow sundress, her joyful laughter echoing across the estate grounds.

Chasing slowly behind her, his tail wagging like a black pendulum, was Bruno.

The giant Cane Corso moved with a noticeable, permanent limp, and a thick, silver scar ran along his left side where the bullet wounds had healed. But his coat was thick, glossy, and clean, his eyes were bright, and his arthritis was entirely managed by daily therapy and endless love.

On the grand marble terrace overlooking the gardens, Alessandro stood leaning against the balustrade, holding a glass of iced lemonade. He wore a simple white linen shirt with the sleeves rolled up to his elbows, looking relaxed, healthy, and years younger than he had six months ago.

Beside him stood Sophia, wearing a beautiful floral summer dress, her dark hair blowing gently in the warm afternoon breeze. On her left ring finger sparkled a stunning, modest diamond ring—a simple, elegant band that Alessandro had placed on her finger two weeks prior when he asked her to become his wife.

The Valenti syndicate was no more, completely dismantled and absorbed into a new, strictly controlled commercial enterprise that focused on legal logistics, real estate, and international shipping. Alessandro had systematically stripped his empire of its senseless bloodshed, forging a new order designed built not on terror, but on absolute protection of his family.

"Look at them," Sophia said softly, resting her head against Alessandro's broad shoulder as she watched Emma attempt to place a crown of dandelions on Bruno's massive head.

Alessandro wrapped his arm around her waist, pulling her close. "He has surprisingly good patience for a dog who used to bite people's kneecaps off."

Sophia chuckled softly, leaning up to kiss his jawline. "He loves his sister. Just like his father does."

A black sedan pulled up the main driveway, stopping near the terrace. Marco Bellini stepped out, wearing a sharp grey suit, holding a leather briefing folder. He walked up the terrace steps, bowing his head politely to Sophia.

"Mrs. Moretti. Boss."

"What is it, Marco?" Alessandro asked smoothly.

"The union representatives from the northern ports just signed the new labor agreements," Marco reported, a satisfied smile on his face. "Total compliance. No pushback, no threats. They know who runs the Great Lakes now."

"Good," Alessandro nodded. "Anything else?"

Marco looked over at Emma, who had successfully wedged the dandelion crown between Bruno's ears and was currently forcing the giant dog to sit still for an imaginary photograph.

"Old man Valenti's former lieutenants sent a wedding gift from federal prison," Marco added dryly. "A formal letter of apology and a donation to the Denver Children's Hospital in Emma's name."

Alessandro's dark eyes glinted with quiet amusement. "Accept the donation. Burn the letter."

"Yes, boss," Marco smiled, turning to leave. "Oh, and Dr. Hale called. He said Bruno's quarterly checkup is next week. He asked if Emma could be present to ensure the patient behaves."

"Tell him she'll be there," Sophia laughed.

Marco bowed and walked back down the steps toward his car.

Alessandro set his glass down on the stone table and took Sophia's hands in his, looking deep into her soft brown eyes.

"Are you happy here, Sophia?" he asked, his voice filled with a quiet, rare vulnerability.

Sophia looked around at the sunlit estate, at the blooming gardens, at the safe, peaceful home they had built out of the ashes of a terrifying nightmare.

"I have never felt safer in my entire life, Alessandro," she answered truthfully, leaning up to kiss his lips gently. "You gave us a life we never thought we could have."

Down on the grass, Emma suddenly let out a squeal of excitement. "Mommy! Mr. Boss Man! Look!"

Alessandro and Sophia turned toward the lawn.

Emma had managed to climb onto Bruno's broad, sturdy back. The giant, terrifying war-dog—a beast that had once brought rival crime syndicates to their knees and struck terror into the hearts of hardened men across Illinois—was carefully, gently walking across the soft green grass, carrying his tiny princess like a prized jewel.

Emma raised her small arms to the blue sky, laughing endlessly in the warm summer sun.

Alessandro smiled—a full, radiant, genuine smile that lit up his entire face—and held his wife tight as they watched the beast and the child play in the kingdom they had built together.
