PART 4: THE MAN BEHIND DANIEL

The name on the paper stayed in my mind.
Victor Lang.
Daniel’s lawyer.
The man who sat beside him during every meeting.
The man who spoke for him when Daniel wanted my company.
The man who looked at me with sympathy while helping destroy my life.
My father read the letter again.
Then slowly folded it.
“Did you know him?”
I shook my head.
“No.”
That was what frightened me.
Because Daniel betrayed me.
I expected that.
But Victor?
He was supposed to be the professional.
The person who only handled paperwork.
The person who knew the law.
Not someone who wanted my life to collapse.
My father’s expression turned serious.
“Your mother was careful.”
“I know.”
“She wouldn’t write a warning without evidence.”
I looked back toward the courthouse.
“Then why didn’t she tell me?”
My father was quiet.
Then answered:
“Maybe because she thought you needed to discover it yourself.”
I hated that answer.
Because a part of me understood.
My mother always believed I needed strength more than protection.
Even after she was gone…
She was still trying to teach me.
The next morning, the investigation expanded.
Daniel’s financial records were frozen.
Vanessa’s apartment was searched.
The company accounts were reviewed.
And then…
Something unexpected happened.
Victor Lang disappeared.
No phone.
No office.
No messages.
He simply vanished.
The same man who had been so confident two days earlier…
Was suddenly gone.
My father sat across from me in his office.
A room filled with old photographs and legal books.
“People don’t disappear unless they have something to hide.”
I looked at the documents.
“He knows we found out.”
My father nodded.
“And that means he is scared.”
I looked down.
“Why would someone like him be scared?”
My father didn’t answer.
Because we both knew.
People like Victor didn’t fear losing money.
They feared losing control.
That afternoon, I visited Morgan Holdings.
The building my mother built.
The place where I used to visit as a child.
Employees stopped when they saw me.
Some looked surprised.
Others looked guilty.
Because for three years…
Daniel had been running everything.
And I had stayed away.
Not because I didn’t care.
Because I trusted him.
I walked into the main office.
Daniel’s office.
The nameplate had already been removed.
But the memories remained.
The first time he brought me here.
The promises.
The future he described.
All lies.
My assistant handed me a box.
“We found this in Mr. Carter’s private office.”
I opened it.
Inside were files.
Contracts.
Emails.
And one folder labeled:
PROJECT CLAIRE.
My blood went cold.
“What is this?”
The assistant looked nervous.
“I don’t know.”
I opened it.
The first page was a report.
A detailed analysis of me.
My habits.
My personality.
My finances.
My weaknesses.
My strengths.
My marriage.
Everything.
My hands started shaking.
Daniel wasn’t just preparing to take my company.
He was studying me.
Planning me.
Like I was a problem to solve.
Then I found something worse.
A payment record.
From Daniel.
To Victor Lang.
Three years ago.
Before our wedding.
Before anyone knew anything.
I stared at the date.
Because it changed everything.
The affair wasn’t the beginning.
The plan started before I even married him.
That night, I couldn’t sleep.
My daughter moved inside me.
A small reminder to stay calm.
To think.
To survive.
My phone rang.
Unknown number.
I almost ignored it.
Then I answered.
“Hello?”
No response.
Only breathing.
“Who is this?”
A man spoke quietly.
“Claire.”
I froze.
The voice was familiar.
Not Daniel.
Not my father.
Victor.
“What do you want?”
A pause.
Then:
“To warn you.”
I laughed bitterly.
“After everything?”
“I know.”
His voice sounded tired.
“I made mistakes.”
“You helped destroy my life.”
“I know.”
I gripped the phone.
“Where are you?”
Silence.
Then:
“Somewhere Daniel can’t reach me.”
“Why call me?”
His answer came slowly.
“Because you’re in danger.”
I felt cold.
“From who?”
Victor whispered:
“Not Daniel.”
A pause.
“Not Vanessa.”
“Someone else.”
My heart raced.
“Who?”
He said:
“The person who paid me.”
The room went silent.
My father walked in.
He saw my face.
“What happened?”
I put the phone on speaker.
Victor continued:
“The divorce.”
“The company attack.”
“The fake accusations.”
“All of it.”
“It wasn’t Daniel’s idea.”
I looked at my father.
Victor’s voice became lower.
“It came from someone in your family.”
My father froze.
“What?”
Victor whispered:
“Someone who wanted Morgan Holdings before Claire was even born.”
Then the call ended.
I stared at the phone.
May you like
Because there was only one question left.
Who in my family wanted me gone?
