PART 5: THE FAMILY SECRET

PART 5: THE FAMILY SECRET
The words stayed with me all night.
Someone in my family wanted me gone.
Not Daniel.
Not Vanessa.
Someone closer.
Someone who knew me.
Someone who knew my mother.
I sat in my father’s office the next morning with the same question repeating in my mind.
“Who?”
My father looked through old records.
His face was serious.
“Your mother trusted very few people.”
I stared at him.
“Are you saying someone close to her betrayed her?”
He didn’t answer immediately.
That was the answer.
My father pulled out an old file.
“This was from before you were born.”
I opened it.
Inside were company records.
Partnership agreements.
Names.
Then I saw one.
Evelyn Morgan.
My aunt.
My mother’s older sister.
I froze.
“My aunt?”
My father nodded.
“She was supposed to inherit part of the company.”
“But your mother changed the agreement.”
“Why?”
He looked at me.
“Because Evelyn tried to destroy the company.”
I couldn’t believe it.
My entire life…
I remembered Aunt Evelyn as kind.
She brought gifts on my birthday.
She hugged me.
She told me I reminded her of my mother.
But now…
My father continued.
“Your mother discovered Evelyn was moving money.”
“She confronted her.”
“And after that, they never spoke again.”
I felt sick.
“Why didn’t I know?”
My father’s expression softened.
“Because your mother wanted to protect you.”
Protect me.
Everyone kept saying that.
But protection had become another word for secrets.
I found Evelyn that afternoon.
She lived in a quiet neighborhood far from the city.
Not the mansion.
Not the luxury I expected.
A simple house.
Almost peaceful.
When she opened the door and saw me…
She froze.
“Claire.”
I studied her face.
The same face I remembered.
The same woman who held my hand at my mother’s funeral.
“You know why I’m here.”
Her expression changed.
“Come inside.”
I followed her.
The house smelled like old memories.
Photos covered the walls.
My mother.
Me.
Our family.
Like nothing had ever broken.
Evelyn sat down.
“You look like her.”
I didn’t answer.
“Did you help Daniel?”
Her eyes moved away.
That was enough.
My heart sank.
“You did.”
She whispered:
“I never wanted it to go this far.”
Anger rose inside me.
“You helped someone steal my company.”
“No.”
She looked at me.
“I helped someone expose the truth.”
I frowned.
“What truth?”
Evelyn opened a drawer.
She pulled out an old envelope.
“The truth your mother hid.”
My hands tightened.
“My mother?”
She nodded.
“She wasn’t the person everyone thought she was.”
I stared.
“What are you talking about?”
Evelyn looked hurt.
“Your mother took everything.”
I shook my head.
“No.”
“She built everything.”
“That’s what she wanted everyone to believe.”
My heart raced.
“Explain.”
Evelyn opened the envelope.
Inside was an old document.
A birth record.
A legal agreement.
And another name.
I read it.
Then stopped.
Because the person listed as the original owner of Morgan Holdings…
Was not my mother.
It was someone else.
Someone whose name I knew.
My grandfather.
Evelyn continued:
“Your mother inherited the company.”
“She didn’t build it.”
“She changed the story.”
I looked up.
“That doesn’t make sense.”
Evelyn’s voice became bitter.
“She erased everyone who helped her.”
“Even me.”
I stared at her.
“Is that why?”
“Because you wanted revenge?”
Her eyes filled.
“No.”
“I wanted the truth.”
Then she handed me another paper.
A letter.
From my mother.
But this one was different.
Not loving.
Not gentle.
A warning.
Evelyn said:
“Your mother knew someone would discover everything.”
“That's why she created the trust.”
I read the letter.
My mother wrote:
If Evelyn ever comes to Claire with accusations…
Do not believe everything she says.
I stopped breathing.
Because there was more.
The next line was written darker.
Almost like she wrote it in a hurry.
Because the real person who betrayed me…
Is still alive.
I looked at Evelyn.
“What does this mean?”
Evelyn looked terrified.
“I don’t know.”
“You do.”
She shook her head.
“I swear.”
Then suddenly…
A loud crash came from outside.
We both froze.
The window shattered.
Evelyn pushed me down.
A bullet hit the wall behind us.
I screamed.
Someone was shooting.
Evelyn grabbed my arm.
“Claire, we have to leave.”
I stared at her.
After everything…
She was protecting me.
Then another shot fired.
This time closer.
Evelyn looked toward the window.
Her face went pale.
Because she recognized the person outside.
“No…”
I whispered:
“Who is it?”
She grabbed my hand.
And said:
“The person your mother was afraid of.”
The door handle started moving.
Someone was trying to get inside.
Evelyn looked at me.
“Run.”
But before we could move…
The door opened.
And the person standing there made my blood freeze.
Because it wasn’t a stranger.
It was someone I trusted my entire life.
Someone who had just arrived with my father’s security team.
Someone who knew exactly where I was.
My father’s closest friend.
The man who helped raise me.
He looked at me.
May you like
And smiled.
“Hello, Claire.”
