Chapter 2 - The Shadows of the Press

By late afternoon, the storm had drifted out to sea, leaving a cold, clear winter dusk over the Atlantic.

Inside his private study on the second floor, Michael sat behind a heavy walnut desk, watching three monitors displaying real-time media alerts. The storm outside had cleared, but the media storm was just beginning.

As Lydia Mercer had threatened, the story had broken by three o'clock.

BILLIONAIRE MICHAEL ANDERS SEIZES MERCER DAUGHTER-IN-LAW AND CHILDREN IN DRAMATIC BREAKFAST STANDOFF.

THE VIRGIN BILLIONAIRE'S SECRET FAMILY? PRIVATE VOWS QUESTIONED AFTER EAST COAST MANSION RESCUE.

A prominent tabloid had already published a grainy photograph of Michael loading Eleanor’s battered grocery bags into his SUV in the pouring rain. Below the picture were endless speculation threads, painting Eleanor as an opportunistic widow and Michael as an unhinged eccentric using his billions to play savior.

A soft knock sounded at the door.

"Come in," Michael said, closing the browser windows.

Eleanor stepped into the study. She was wearing a soft cream sweater and dark trousers that Evelyn had provided from the estate’s guest wardrobe. Her hair was brushed back, her split lip treated with antiseptic, though the dark purple bruise along her jawline remained stark against her pale skin.

"The girls are asleep," Eleanor said, lingering near the threshold. "Evelyn made them chicken soup. They haven't slept in real beds in two years."

"Sit down, please," Michael said, gesturing to the leather armchair across from him.

She sat on the very edge of the cushion, her hands clasped tightly in her lap. "I saw the television downstairs. In the kitchen."

Michael sighed, leaning back. "Ignore it, Eleanor. The press feeds on drama because they cannot comprehend simple human decency."

"They are saying terrible things about you," she whispered, her eyes shining with unshed tears. "They are calling you names. They are saying you did this for publicity, or... or because you wanted something from me. They don't know that you just saved us from a living hell."

"My reputation has been public property since I was twenty-five," Michael said coldly. "Let them talk. My attorneys are already issuing cease-and-desist letters to the outlets making defamatory claims about you."

Eleanor looked down at her hands, her shoulders trembling slightly. "Lydia isn't going to stop, Michael. You cut off the Mercer Foundation funding today. That foundation was Charles's primary source of prestige and money. They will come after us with everything they have."

"They have nothing," Michael replied.

"They have the legal system," Eleanor said, her voice dropping to a terrified whisper. "Lydia told me months ago that if I ever tried to leave, she would file for full custody of Grace, Faith, and Hope. She has high-priced lawyers. She will claim I am an unfit mother—that I have no income, no home, and that I took them to live in the house of a single, unmarried man."

Michael watched her carefully. He recognized the bone-deep terror of a mother who had been systematically dismantled by manipulative abusers until she believed she had no strength left to fight back.

"They won't take them," Michael said, his voice dropping into a register of absolute, unbreakable resolve. "I promise you, Eleanor. Over my dead body."

She raised her head, looking into his steady, gray eyes. For the first time since he had met her at that violent breakfast table, he saw a spark of hope ignite behind her fear.
