Chapter 6 - The Courtroom Circus

On Friday morning, the Rhode Island Family Court in Providence was surrounded by three hundred reporters, news vans, and satellite trucks.

When Michael’s armored town car pulled up to the curb, flashbulbs exploded like lightning.

Michael stepped out first, wearing an immaculate dark gray three-piece suit. He turned and extended his hand to Eleanor, who stepped out wearing an elegant navy tailored dress, her dark hair pinned back, looking every bit the proud, dignified woman she was.

Behind them, Evelyn led Grace, Faith, and Hope, who were dressed in matching woolen coats, holding hands tightly.

As they ascended the granite steps, reporters shouted frantically over the barricades:

"MR. ANDERS! IS IT TRUE YOU'RE ENGAGED TO THE MERCER MAID?!"

"ELEANOR! ARE YOU WITH HIM FOR THE MONEY?!"

"MICHAEL! WHAT ABOUT YOUR VOW OF CELIBACY?!"

Michael ignored them all, keeping his arm firmly around Eleanor’s waist, guiding her safely through the chaos into the quiet security of the courthouse corridor.

Inside Courtroom 3B, Judge Beatrice Vance (no relation to Harrison Vance) sat behind the mahogany bench, her sharp eyes scanning the standing-room-only gallery.

At the petitioner's table, Lydia Mercer sat wrapped in a mink coat, her husband Charles beside her, flanked by Harrison Vance and three junior associate attorneys. Lydia wore an expression of triumphant malice, convinced that state law was about to hand her victory.

At the respondent's table, Michael, Eleanor, and Arthur Sterling took their seats.

"This court is in session," Judge Vance declared, striking her gavel. "We are here to consider the emergency petition for temporary child guardianship filed by Mrs. Lydia Mercer regarding the minor children Grace, Faith, and Hope Hayes."

Harrison Vance stood up immediately, adjusting his tie. "Your Honor, the facts of this case are tragic but clear. Following the death of her husband, Mrs. Eleanor Hayes proved incapable of providing financial stability. She was housed out of charity by my clients. Three weeks ago, following a minor household disagreement, she absconded with the children to the residence of Mr. Michael Anders."

Vance gestured toward Michael with a disdainful wave of his hand.

"Mrs. Hayes currently resides in Mr. Anders' home without legal status, without employment, and in an uncommitted cohabitation that presents profound instability for these young girls. We request immediate temporary custody be granted to her grandmother, Mrs. Mercer."

Judge Vance looked over her glasses at Arthur Sterling. "Mr. Sterling? How does your client respond?"

Sterling stood up calmly. "Your Honor, opposing counsel’s entire argument rests on the false premise that Mrs. Hayes' presence in the Anders estate is an 'uncommitted arrangement.'"

Sterling pulled a certified legal document from his briefcase and approached the bench.

"On Monday of this week, Mr. Michael Anders and Mrs. Eleanor Hayes executed a formal declaration of intent to marry. They are officially engaged. Mr. Anders has legally adopted financial responsibility for the household as her future husband, and has established a fifty-million-dollar educational and support trust for Grace, Faith, and Hope Hayes."

A massive, audible gasp went through the courtroom gallery.

Lydia Mercer stood up, her face turning purple with rage. "That's a lie! It's a sham! He's a virgin! Everyone knows he swore never to marry! He's doing this to embarrass my family!"

"Sit down, Mrs. Mercer!" Judge Vance warned, slamming her gavel.

Harrison Vance looked stunned, his legal strategy evaporating before his eyes. "Your Honor! This engagement is a fraudulent sham concocted seventy-two hours ago to defeat this petition!"

"Is it, Mr. Vance?" Judge Vance asked coldly, reviewing the certified trust documents bearing the state seal. "Because these signatures are notarized, the trust funds are fully capitalized, and the engagement declaration is legally binding under state statutes."

She looked directly at Eleanor and Michael.

"Mrs. Hayes, step forward."

Eleanor stood up, her legs trembling, and walked to the podium.

"Mrs. Hayes," Judge Vance asked gently. "Are you entering this engagement under duress, coercion, or financial desperation?"

Eleanor stood tall. She looked at Lydia Mercer's cruel, panicked face, then turned her head to look at Michael Anders, who watched her from the table with eyes full of absolute, unwavering faith.

"No, Your Honor," Eleanor spoke, her voice ringing clear across the courtroom. "I am entering this engagement because Michael Anders is the bravest, kindest man I have ever known. He saved my life, he saved my children, and I love him with all my heart."

The lie fell from her lips with such intense, desperate conviction that even Michael felt a sharp, unexpected crack in his chest—a sudden, profound realization that the words didn't feel like a lie at all.

Judge Vance nodded slowly. She picked up her gavel.

"The petition for temporary custody filed by Mrs. Lydia Mercer is hereby DENIED with prejudice," Judge Vance ruled. "Full legal and physical custody remains with the mother, Eleanor Hayes, in the permanent residence of her fiancé, Michael Anders. Court is adjourned."

BANG.
