Chapter 5 - The Desperate Lie

The silence in the grand library that night was suffocating.

Outside, the ocean waves battered the granite cliffs beneath the house. Inside, legal briefs, court summonses, and property deeds were spread across Michael’s walnut desk.

Arthur Sterling, Michael’s chief legal counsel, shook his head as he finished reviewing the Mercer petition.

"It's a trap, Michael," Sterling said heavily. "Harrison Vance is ruthless. They know Eleanor has no employment history for the last two years. They know she has no independent assets. Under state law, if an emergency custody petition proves a surviving parent is homeless and living in an uncommitted arrangement with an unrelated wealthy benefactor, the judge almost always grants temporary custody to established extended family—especially family with the social standing of the Mercers."

Eleanor sat on the window bench, her knees pulled up to her chest, her face buried in her hands. Her sobs were quiet, heartbroken, and hopeless.

"They're going to take them," she wept. "Lydia will take my babies. She'll lock them in that house... she'll turn them into servants... she'll ruin their lives just like she ruined Daniel's..."

Michael stood up from his desk. He walked across the Persian rug and knelt beside her, gently taking her shaking hands in his.

"I won't let her, Eleanor," Michael said softly.

"How?!" she cried, looking up at him with red, tear-filled eyes. "You heard Sterling! You can't just give me money—Vance will claim it's a bribe or a payoff! You can't just buy me a house—they'll say I'm your dependent mistress! The law doesn't care about the truth, Michael! It cares about paper!"

Michael looked at her face, at the pure, unadulterated devotion she possessed for her daughters—a devotion he would have given his entire four-billion-dollar fortune to have experienced from his own cold, abusive father as a child.

A terrible, brilliant decision formed in his mind.

"There is one piece of paper that Vance and Lydia Mercer cannot break," Michael said quietly.

Eleanor blinked through her tears. "What... what do you mean?"

Michael looked over at his attorney, then back into Eleanor’s hazel eyes.

"We tell the court that we are engaged," Michael said.

The room went dead silent.

Sterling gasped. "Michael, think about what you're saying! The press—"

"I don't give a damn about the press!" Michael snapped, standing up, his eyes flashing with authority. "If we announce that Eleanor and I have been privately engaged, that she and the girls are living here as my future wife and daughters, Vance’s argument about an 'uncommitted arrangement' vanishes overnight! As my fiancée, her housing is legitimate. As my future stepdaughters, their security is absolute!"

Eleanor stared at him, her chest heaving. "Michael... no... you can't do that. Your reputation... your private vows... the whole world knows you vowed never to marry... they'll tear you apart..."

"Let them tear," Michael whispered, kneeling back down in front of her and taking her hands tightly. "Eleanor, I don't care about my reputation. I care about keeping Grace, Faith, and Hope in your arms. Will you let me protect you this way?"

Eleanor looked into the face of the virgin billionaire—the man who had given up his privacy, his quiet life, and now his holy independence, just to save a woman and three children he had met three weeks ago.

"Yes," Eleanor sobbed, pressing his hands against her tear-stained cheek. "Yes."
