Chapter 8 - The Price of Protection

By eleven o'clock that night, four black federal sedans pulled up the long cobblestone driveway, their emergency lights flashing blue and red against the wet granite walls of the estate.
Eight agents from the Federal Bureau of Investigation, led by Special Agent Marcus Thorne, stepped into the grand foyer, holding federal search warrants and subpoena documents.
Evelyn gathered the three frightened girls in the upper nursery, while Michael and Eleanor stood in the main library as agents began packing server drives and financial ledgers into heavy plastic bins.
Harrison Vance stood near the front entryway alongside Agent Thorne, a triumphant, wicked smirk on his face.
"Mr. Anders," Agent Thorne said coldly, setting a legal document on the desk. "You are under federal investigation for wire fraud, corporate tax evasion, and conspiracy. The evidence indicates that Anders Relief funds were illegally diverted into Mercer Foundation accounts prior to your public 'rescue' of Mrs. Hayes."
"That is a fabricated lie created by Harrison Vance and Charles Mercer," Michael said, his voice terrifyingly calm as he stood in front of Eleanor, shielding her from the agents.
"The digital signatures on the bank transfers bear your private cryptographic key, Mr. Anders," Agent Thorne stated. "In the eyes of the Department of Justice, you used your vast wealth to launder funds, and then staged a fake engagement with a material witness—Mrs. Hayes—to invoke spousal privilege and prevent her from testifying against you."
Eleanor stepped out from behind Michael, her eyes wide with shock and fury. "That's insane! Michael didn't launder anything! He didn't even know me six months ago! He saved us from being abused!"
"Save your statements for the grand jury, Mrs. Hayes," Vance sneered from the doorway. "Under federal law, if Mr. Anders is indicted for conspiracy, your alleged 'engagement' provides zero legal protection. In fact, if the court proves this engagement is a fraudulent sham designed to obstruct justice, you will both be charged with federal obstruction—and your children will be placed in state foster care immediately."
Eleanor felt the floor drop out from beneath her feet.
The lie she had told—the lie Michael had crafted to save Grace, Faith, and Hope—was now being used by their enemies as the very trap that would destroy them all.
If Michael went to prison, she would lose her children forever. If she confessed that the engagement was a fake, Michael would be ruined, and her girls would be handed over to state foster care.
Agent Thorne stepped forward, pulling a set of steel handcuffs from his belt.
"Michael Anders, you are under arrest for federal financial fraud and obstruction of justice. You have the right to remain silent..."
"No!" Eleanor screamed, throwing herself in front of Michael, her hands pressing against the agent's chest. "NO! Take me! It was my fault! He only did this to help us!"
"Eleanor, stop," Michael said softly. He gently took her wrists, pulling her back against his chest. He looked down into her frantic, tear-streaked face, his gray eyes completely devoid of fear.
"Evelyn!" Michael called out over the commotion.
Evelyn appeared at the top of the stairs, her face pale with dread.
"Call Sterling," Michael commanded calmly as Agent Thorne clicked the steel handcuffs around his wrists behind his back. "Tell him to execute Protocol Seven."
"Protocol Seven...?" Evelyn gasped. "Michael, you can't... that will expose everything..."
"Execute it," Michael ordered.

He turned to Eleanor, leaning down to press a soft, firm kiss against her forehead—a kiss so lingering, so filled with absolute, real devotion that every agent in the room paused in surprise.
"Don't be afraid, Eleanor," Michael whispered against her skin. "The truth is coming."
