Chapter 10 - The Unbroken Promise

Three months later.
Mid-summer had brought warm, clear sunshine to the cliffs of Lake Forest.
The gardens of the Voss estate were filled with bright white roses, blooming lavender, and green grass stretching down to the sparkling blue water of Lake Michigan.
On the high stone terrace overlooking the lake, a small, elegant table had been set with fresh fruit, warm pastries, and crystal glasses of iced tea.
Elena sat in a plush lounge chair, dressed in a soft white summer gown. Her pregnancy was now beautifully evident, her hand resting comfortably over her round, six-month bump.
Beside her, sitting on a low wooden bench, was Damian.
He was wearing a light grey linen shirt, his sleeves rolled up to his forearms, his bare hands gently resting over hers on her stomach.
Through the quiet afternoon air, the faint sound of Margaret laugh drifted over from the garden patio where Nora Bell was showing her a new patch of yellow sunflowers.
Ethan Kane walked out onto the terrace carrying a thin blue folder. He looked relaxed, wearing a navy blazer without a tie—a rare sight for the corporate attorney.
"The final probate filings for the Whitaker estate have been cleared by the Cook County registrar," Ethan reported with a warm smile. "Your father’s name has been completely cleared of all debt allegations, Elena. The freight company that forged those invoices has been permanently shut down."
Elena let out a soft, joyful breath, tears glistening in her hazel eyes. "Thank you, Ethan. Thank you for everything."
"It was my honor, Mrs. Voss," Ethan said, offering a respectful nod before turning to Damian. "The South Docks expansion project opens next Monday. The board is requesting your presence for the ribbon-cutting ceremony."
Damian looked up at Ethan, his hand still resting warm and solid over Elena’s bump. "Tell the board that my wife and I will attend together. As equal partners."
Ethan smiled broadly. "I will inform them immediately." He turned and walked back toward the main house, leaving them alone in the quiet summer sunlight.
Elena turned her head to look at Damian, her fingers intertwining with his bare hand. "Equal partners?"
"Always," Damian said softly, leaning closer until his lips gently touched hers in a tender, lingering kiss that tasted of sweet summer tea and absolute peace.
When he pulled back, his dark grey eyes were clear, bright, and filled with a warmth that no contract, no legal document, and no billions of dollars could ever have bought.
Suddenly, beneath their joined hands, a strong, distinct flutter kicked against Elena’s stomach.
Damian froze, his breath catching in his throat as he felt the clear, unmistakable movement of his baby girl kicking against his palm.
A broad, genuine smile broke across Damian Voss’s carved face—a smile so bright and real that it erased every dark shadow of his past.
"She's strong," Damian whispered, his voice thick with emotion.
"She gets it from her father," Elena smiled, wiping a tear of happiness from her cheek.
May you like
"No," Damian said, leaning down to place a gentle kiss directly over her stomach, where their daughter was moving beneath the white linen. "She gets it from the woman who wasn't afraid to tell me the truth on the worst day of her life."
They sat together on the stone terrace as the sun began its slow descent into the horizon, casting gold and crimson light across the calm waters of Lake Michigan—a family unbroken, a promise kept, and a future written not in blood, but in love.
