Chapter 4 - The Tunnels Beneath

The return drive to Lake Forest was conducted in absolute, suffocating silence.

When the heavy iron gates of the Voss estate closed behind the black SUV, Damian did not head toward the main entrance. He walked directly around the west wing toward the service entrance behind the industrial kitchens, his long strides cutting through the fresh blanket of white snow.

Elena followed him, her heavy winter coat wrapped tightly around her shoulders, with Ethan Kane walking two steps behind her.

Mrs. Nora Bell was standing in the kitchen pantry, sorting fresh linens, when the heavy door banged open. She looked at Damian’s face, then at Elena, and immediately set her clipboard down on the counter.

"Where is Victor?" Damian asked. His voice was not raised, but it carried a vibration that made the copper pans hanging from the ceiling rack ring softly.

"He went down to the wine cellar twenty minutes ago with Marcus," Nora said, her voice completely flat. "They brought two leather cases."

Damian did not answer. He walked straight past the pantry toward the narrow, painted door he had forbidden Elena from approaching on her first day in the house.

He pulled a heavy brass key from his vest pocket, inserted it into the lock, and turned it.

The lock released with a heavy, metallic click.

Elena stepped up behind him. "Damian... wait."

Damian stopped at the top of the stone stairs leading down into the darkness. He turned his head to look at her. "Stay upstairs, Elena. Go to your room."

"No," Elena said, her hazel eyes fierce and unwavering. "I’m not sitting in a bedroom waiting to find out what happens to my life. I’m the one carrying this child. If your uncle ruined twelve years of your life and tried to make me look like an unfaithful liar, I am going down there with you."

Damian stared at her. For the first time, he did not command her to leave. He simply reached into his coat, checked the action on a heavy custom sidearm, and began walking down the stone steps.

The air grew cold, damp, and heavy with the smell of old stone, earth, and aged oak barrels.

The basement of the Voss estate was not a simple wine cellar. It was a massive, vaulted subterranean network built in the 1920s during Prohibition—a labyrinth of brick tunnels, reinforced storage rooms, and heavy iron doors that led toward the shoreline of Lake Michigan.

At the end of the main stone corridor, a warm yellow light spilled out from an open doorway.

Two men were standing over a broad wooden table covered with blue architectural prints and legal deeds. Victor Voss, wearing a tailored brown suit, was pointing at a map of the south docks while Marcus, his long-time security chief, packed stacks of bearer bonds into an open leather briefcase.

Damian stepped into the doorway.

"Planning a trip, Uncle?" Damian asked softly.

Victor froze. The color drained from his face so fast it looked as if his blood had stopped flowing entirely. Marcus instinctively reached toward his armpit for a shoulder holster, but Ethan Kane—stepping out from behind Damian—raised a suppressed pistol and aimed it directly at the center of Marcus’s chest.

"Freeze, Marcus," Ethan said calmly. "Drop the weapon."

Marcus slowly lifted his hands away from his coat and stepped back against the stone wall.

Victor swallowed hard, trying to force his trembling lips into a suave, aristocratic smile. "Damian... what is the meaning of this? I was just clearing out some old financial files from the estate archives—"

"I just came from Dr. Aris Thorne's office on Michigan Avenue," Damian interrupted. His voice was terrifyingly soft, almost a whisper, as he stepped further into the room. "He found something very interesting, Victor."

Victor’s hands began to shake violently. He tried to hide them by placing them on the edges of the wooden table. "Thorne? Who is Thorne?"

"He's a real physician," Elena said, stepping out from behind Damian into the light of the hanging bulb. "Not a murderer with a medical license like Dr. Harrison."

Victor’s eyes snapped to Elena. A flash of pure, venomous hatred crossed his face before he managed to mask it. "Elena... child... you don't know what you're talking about. This woman is hysterical, Damian! She’s trying to cover up her own indiscretions by making wild accusations—"

Damian moved so fast it barely registered as human motion.

He closed the ten-foot distance between them in a single stride, his leather-gloved left hand reaching out like a steel vise to grab Victor by the throat. He lifted the older man off his feet, slamming him back against the cold brick wall with a force that rattled the wine racks lining the corridor outside.

"Do not speak her name," Damian snarled, his face inches from his uncle’s pale, gasping face. "Dr. Harrison confessed everything to my legal team twenty minutes ago. We have the bank records from Panama, Victor. We have the wire transfers from your holding company paying Harrison twenty-five thousand dollars a month for twelve years to keep me supplied with synthetic hormone suppressants."

Victor clawed frantically at Damian’s gloved hand, his boots kicking uselessly at the dirt floor. "Damian... please... it was for the family... the syndicate needed... needed a steady hand..."

"You poisoned me for twelve years," Damian whispered, his grey eyes burning with an ancient, dark fire. "You made me believe I was broken. You made me build an empire thinking I had no future to hand it to. And then you brought this innocent woman into my house, expecting that when she revealed a pregnancy, I would murder her for treason and leave the succession open for your sons."

Elena watched from the doorway, her hand clutching her stomach as she saw the dark reality of the Voss family unveiled before her eyes.

"Damian," Elena called out, her voice breaking through the heavy darkness of the tunnel. "Don't kill him here. If you kill him now, you become the monster he wanted you to be."

Damian didn't move for three long heartbeats. His fingers remained locked around his uncle’s throat, feeling the desperate, frantic pulse of a man who had stolen twelve years of his life.

Then, slowly, Damian opened his gloved hand.

May you like

Victor crumpled to the stone floor in a weeping, gasping heap, clutching his throat and coughing violently.

Damian looked down at him with utter disgust. "Ethan," he said without looking back. "Call Federal Prosecutor Vance. Tell him I have twelve years of medical fraud, attempted murder, and corporate treason ready for his grand jury."
