Chapter 6 - The Shadows of Cross Harbor

Four weeks later.

The snow across Chicago had begun to melt into dark, slushy runoff along the edges of Michigan Avenue.

Cross Harbor Tower stood like a needle of black glass against a grey winter sky. On the forty-first floor, the atmosphere inside the corporate headquarters had undergone a massive, terrifying shift.

Over forty senior executives, department heads, and regional logistics directors were seated around the massive oval conference table in the central boardroom.

Damian Voss sat at the head of the table. He wore a crisp dark blue suit, his posture immaculate, his hands resting flat on the polished wood—completely bare. The black gloves were gone.

Beside him sat Elena.

She was wearing an elegant, high-collared burgundy dress that subtly accommodated her expanding waistline. Her auburn hair was styled neatly over her shoulders, her hazel eyes cool and composed as she reviewed the financial documents on the tablet in front of her.

Beside her sat Ethan Kane, who had officially been named Executive Vice President of Cross Harbor Logistics following the arrest of Victor’s allies.

"The restructuring of the South Docks project is complete," Ethan announced to the silent room, his voice crisp and professional. "All contracts previously managed by Victor Voss’s shell companies in Delaware have been terminated. Direct oversight of the deep-water expansion has been transferred to the newly established Voss Family Heritage Trust."

An older executive seated near the middle of the table, Arthur Vance—a long-time associate of Victor’s—cleared his throat nervously.

"Mr. Voss," Vance said, his eyes nervously shifting between Damian and Elena. "While we respect the corporate governance changes... the board remains concerned about the public perception. The media is still asking questions about your uncle’s arrest and the... sudden announcement regarding Mrs. Voss’s pregnancy."

Damian slowly leaned forward, resting his forearms on the table. The quiet intensity in his grey eyes made three executives in the second row visibly straighten their ties.

"What questions, Arthur?" Damian asked softly.

"Well..." Vance stammered, sweating beneath his collar. "The long-standing rumor regarding your... health history. The press is suggesting that the timeline of Mrs. Voss’s pregnancy is... convenient, given the timing of the board restructuring."

Elena did not wait for Damian to respond. She picked up her tablet, touched the screen twice, and projected a series of sealed documents onto the massive high-definition display at the end of the room.

The screen displayed certified federal court exhibits, complete DNA parentage verification reports signed by the Chief Medical Examiner of Illinois, and sworn affidavits from federal prosecutors regarding Victor’s twelve-year poisoning scheme.

"The medical documentation is absolute, Mr. Vance," Elena said, her voice dropping into the steady, authoritative tone she had used for seven years in the ICU. "My child is Damian Voss’s direct biological heir. The timeline is inconvenient only for those who built their financial strategies on the lie that my husband had no future."

The boardroom went dead silent.

Vance looked at the projected DNA results, his mouth opening and closing like a fish out of water. "I... I see. Mrs. Voss... I didn't mean to imply—"

"You didn't imply anything, Arthur," Damian cut in, his voice cold as liquid nitrogen. "You asked a question. My wife gave you the answer. Now I have a question for you."

Damian touched a button on his armrest console. The screen changed to show three offshore bank transactions originating from Vance’s private firm in the Cayman Islands to Victor’s legal defense team in Zurich.

"Why are you transferring corporate funds to a man currently facing federal treason charges?" Damian asked.

Vance’s face turned grey. He looked around the table, but every single executive looked away, refusing to meet his eyes.

"Security," Damian said flatly.

Two armed guards in Cross Harbor uniforms stepped into the boardroom, stopping right behind Vance’s chair.

"Mr. Vance’s resignation is effective immediately," Damian announced to the room. "Please escort him from the building and surrender his hard drives to Ethan Kane."

Vance was pulled from his chair without a word of protest and ushered out the heavy glass doors.

Damian turned back to the remaining board members, his hands folded calmly on the polished wood. "Are there any further questions regarding my wife, my child, or the future of this company?"

May you like

No one spoke. No one breathed.

"Good," Damian said. "Meeting adjourned."
