Chapter 8 - The Shadow of the Past

At 11:00 p.m., a heavy storm rolled over Lake Michigan, driving dark waves against the stone seawall below the estate.

Damian sat in his primary study, reviewing a stack of historical financial filings that Ethan Kane had recovered from Victor’s private safe in Panama.

The study was warm, lit by the quiet glow of a stone fireplace.

A low knock sounded at the door, and Mrs. Nora Bell stepped into the room carrying a silver tray with a pot of hot tea and two porcelain cups.

"You're still up, sir," Nora said, setting the tray down on the corner of the heavy oak desk.

"There are still loose ends, Nora," Damian replied without looking up from his papers.

Nora stood near the desk, her old hands folded neatly over her apron. "Your father would be proud of you, Damian."

Damian stopped reading. He looked up, his grey eyes locked on the old housekeeper who had lived in the mansion for forty years. "My father let Victor run the family logistics firm while he looked the other way."

"Your father was a businessman who was afraid of his own brother," Nora said firmly. "He knew Victor was dangerous, but he was too proud to ask for help. You weren't afraid, Damian. You brought that lovely girl into this house, and she gave you the eyes to see what was right in front of you."

Damian looked at the two tea cups on the tray. "I thought I was saving her from her father’s debt, Nora."

"We all think we're the ones doing the saving," Nora smiled faintly. "Until we realize we were the ones drowning all along."

Before Damian could answer, his private satellite phone rang on the desk.

He picked it up immediately. "Damian."

Ethan Kane’s voice came through the speaker, tight with urgency. "Damian... we have a situation at the federal detention facility in downtown Chicago."

Damian’s posture instantly hardened. "What happened?"

"Victor suffered a sudden cardiovascular episode thirty minutes ago in his cell," Ethan reported. "He was transported under armed guard to Northwestern Memorial. The federal prosecutors are there now. The doctors say he has less than two hours."

Damian stood up, reaching for his coat. "Did he request a meeting?"

"He refused to sign his formal confession unless he speaks to you in person," Ethan said. "He claims he has one final piece of information regarding your father’s death twelve years ago."

Damian’s jaw set into an iron line. He looked toward the door leading to the east wing where Elena was sleeping.

"I’m on my way," Damian said flatly.
