Chapter 10 - A New Dawn

Dawn broke over the Atlantic Ocean, painting the stormy grey clouds in long streaks of soft gold and violet.

At the edge of a private airfield in Portland, Maine, a small charter plane stood on the tarmac, its engines idling with a low, steady hum.

Nora stood near the boarding steps, holding Vera securely in a plush baby carrier across her chest. Beside her, Alessio held Nico, his side tightly bandaged beneath a fresh dark coat. The gunshot wound was healing, but the scars of the night would remain forever.

Marcus, Alessio’s trusted pilot and security operative, loaded the last of their bags into the luggage compartment.

"The federal authorities have seized every Moretti asset in New England," Marcus reported, stepping down from the plane. "Margaret Callahan is currently in custody, facing thirty years for racketeering, conspiracy, and fraud. She won't ever see the light of day."

Nora looked back at the horizon, where the sun was rising over the ocean. The eighty-four thousand dollars in fake debt was gone. The diner was ash. Her past was completely erased.

"Where do we go now?" Nora asked, looking up at Alessio.

Alessio looked down at her, his icy blue eyes warmer than she had ever seen them before. "Wherever you want, Nora. Italy, Switzerland, South America. You have full access to the estate trust. You are free."

Nora looked at little Vera, who was staring up at her with bright blue eyes, her tiny fingers clutching Nora's zipper. Then she looked at Nico, who was sleeping peacefully against Alessio's chest.

"I don't want to run anymore," Nora said softly. "I want to finish my nursing degree. I want these children to grow up somewhere quiet, where no one knows the name Moretti or Callahan."

Alessio smiled—a real, genuine smile that transformed his harsh, scarred face into something breathtakingly human.

"Then we buy a house in Vermont," Alessio said gently, holding out his hand to her. "I'll build a garden. You'll finish your degree. And we will raise our children together."

Nora looked at his large, strong hand—the hand of a man who had bled for her, protected her, and offered her a real future built on truth instead of lies.

She took his hand, her fingers intertwining with his.

"Let's go home," Nora said.

Together, they walked up the steps into the plane, leaving the blood, the shadows, and the ghosts of Boston behind them forever as the aircraft rose into the bright, golden morning sky.
