Chapter 6 - The Gloucester Lighthouse

The rain fell in relentless sheets as the Ford sedan navigated the winding coastal roads toward Gloucester. In the back seat, Nico and Vera were finally fast asleep, lulled by the gentle vibration of the engine.
Nora stared out the passenger window at the black ocean crashing violently against the rocky cliffs below. Her heart was beating a wild, irregular rhythm.
"It's a trap," Alessio said, his hands steady on the wheel despite his severe weakness. "Carlo knows you'll do anything for your mother. He's using her to draw us out into the open."
"And if she's really there?" Nora countered, turning to face him. "What if she's held captive in that lighthouse? I left her once because I thought she died in a hospital bed. I will not leave her again."
Alessio looked at her, his icy glare softening into something approaching respect. "You have courage, Nora Callahan. Misguided, dangerous courage, but courage nonetheless."
"I don't have a choice," she replied softly. "My whole life has been a lie. I need the truth."
They pulled off the main road onto a desolate dirt track leading toward the abandoned rocky promontory where the Gloucester Lighthouse stood like a dark, decaying sentinel against the storm.
Alessio turned off the headlights, allowing the car to coast to a silent stop beneath a dense canopy of pine trees. He pulled two silenced pistols from the glove box, handing one to Nora.
"Do you know how to use this?"
"My dad was a cop before he passed," Nora said, racking the slide with familiar ease. "Safety off?"
"Safety off," Alessio confirmed with a faint, dangerous grin. "Stay behind me. If anything goes wrong, you take the twins and drive north to the safehouse address programmed in the GPS. Do not look back."

"I'm not leaving you," Nora said firmly.
Alessio didn't argue. He opened the door into the storm, and together, they moved through the roaring darkness toward the lighthouse tower.
