Chapter 9 - The Last Stand

"Nora, shoot him!" Margaret shrieked, struggling against her ropes. "Shoot Carlo!"

Nora looked at her mother. The woman who had raised her, taught her to sew, comforted her when she was sick—and then faked her own death, leaving her drowning in debt while selling her children to a crime lord.

Carlo managed to break free from Alessio's grip, raising his gun toward Alessio's head.

BANG.

A single gunshot echoed through the storm.

Carlo froze. He looked down at his chest, where a small, neat hole had appeared in his white shirt. He looked up at Nora, surprise lingering in his fading eyes, before he collapsed backward through the broken window, falling hundreds of feet into the churning ocean below.

Nora stood with her arms outstretched, smoke curling slowly from the barrel of her handgun. Her hands were completely steady.

Alessio pushed himself up from the floor, gasping for air, clutching his bloodied side. He looked at Nora with an expression of quiet awe.

Margaret wept in her chair. "Nora... sweetie... untie me! Please! We can leave together! We can start over!"

Nora slowly walked over to her mother. She picked up a fallen pocket knife from the floor and sliced through the thick ropes binding Margaret's wrists.

Margaret stood up, reaching out to hug her daughter. "Oh, thank God..."

Nora stepped back, out of her mother's reach. Her face was cold, impassive, emptied of all grief.

"Nora?" Margaret asked, her hand hanging in the cold air.

"The police are coming," Nora said, her voice flat, emotionless. "Alessio’s ledger uploaded ten minutes ago. Federal agents are raiding your accounts right now."

"Nora, I'm your mother!" Margaret pleaded, terror filling her eyes.

"My mother died three years ago in Mass General," Nora said softly. "You're just a ghost."
