Chapter 3 - Shadows in the Pantry

Alessio was suddenly there, standing in the pantry doorway, his massive frame supported by the doorframe. Despite his severe blood loss, his posture was lethal. He had heard every word.
"Who was on the line?" he demanded softly.
Nora pulled Nico closer to her chest, her back slamming against the industrial refrigerator. She looked at Alessio with newfound terror. "Who are those babies?" she choked out. "Tell me the truth, or I swear to God I'll scream right now."
Alessio’s icy blue eyes softened slightly, a flash of genuine regret passing over his features. "They are the heirs to the Moretti empire. My brother was killed three days ago. Their mother died in childbirth. I took them to keep Carlo from putting a bullet through their heads."
"My mother..." Nora gasped, her breath coming in fast, shallow ragged bursts. "My mother just called me. She died three years ago, Alessio. I buried her! But she spoke to me. She told me the twins were... were mine."
Alessio went completely motionless. The color drained further from his face, not from his physical wound, but from something far deeper. "Margaret Callahan," he murmured.
"You know her name?" Nora screamed softly.
"Your mother didn't die of cancer, Nora," Alessio said gently, taking a slow, painful step toward her. "She was the lead archivist for the Moretti family. She faked her terminal illness when she realized Carlo was going to eliminate everyone who knew about the true lineage of the family bloodline. She went into federal protection... or so I thought."
"No," Nora shook her head violently. "No! I watched her suffer! I paid the medical bills!"
"The bills were a cover," Alessio explained, his voice steadying her spinning world. "Carlo manufactured the debt to keep you trapped in South Boston, tethered to this diner where his men could keep an eye on you. You were her leverage. If your mother ever spoke to the feds, Carlo promised to wipe you out."
Nora’s mind shattered into a thousand jagged pieces. Her grief, her debt, her three years of soul-crushing labor—all of it was a fabricated cage built by a mafia family she didn't even know existed.
"And the twins?" Nora asked, looking down at the quiet infant boy in her arms, then at Vera sleeping soundly in the pantry.

"Six months ago, a private clinic in New York processed a surrogate birth using frozen embryos stolen from a vault in Geneva," Alessio revealed, his eyes locking onto hers. "Embryos created before your mother went into hiding. Nora... you didn't give birth to them, but biologically... they carry your bloodline. You are the last legitimate heir to the Callahan-Moretti estate."
Before Nora could absorb the monumental truth, the heavy front glass windows of Harbor Diner shattered into a rain of lethal crystal.
