Chapter 5 - Safehouse Secrets

Alessio led them through a maze of back alleys to a hidden garage beneath an abandoned seafood packing plant near the harbor. Inside stood a beat-up, non-descript Ford sedan.
He unlocked the doors, placed the baby carriers securely in the back seat, and collapsed onto the driver's seat with a deep, agonizing groan. His skin was gray, drenched in cold sweat.
"Alessio!" Nora dropped into the passenger seat, immediately reaching for his side. The bullet wound had reopened, bleeding heavily. "You're going into shock."
"In the trunk..." Alessio gasped, handing her a key. "Medical kit... military grade. Stitch me up, or we don't make it to New Hampshire."
Nora didn't hesitate. Her nursing training, dormant for three years, kicked in with instinctual precision. She retrieved the heavy canvas medical kit from the trunk, ripped open a package of sterile gloves, surgical thread, and local anesthetic.
Working under the dim interior light of the car, she cleaned the jagged wound, applied the anesthetic, and began stitching the torn tissue beneath his ribs. Alessio gripped the steering wheel, his knuckles turning white, but he didn't utter a single sound.
"You're remarkably good at this," he grunted through clenched teeth as she tied off the last suture.
"I was two months away from my surgical rotation when my mother fell sick," Nora said softly, applying a thick pressure bandage. "Or when I thought she fell sick."
"She protected you the only way she knew how, Nora," Alessio said, his eyes meeting hers in the mirror. "Carlo is a monster. He built an empire on blood and blackmail. Your mother surrendered her entire life so you could live in peace, even if it meant you hated her for leaving you with debt."
"Why did she call me tonight?" Nora asked, her voice trembling. "If she's been hiding for three years, why risk everything to call me now?"
Alessio pulled a small, encrypted drive from his collarbone pocket and handed it to her. "Because tonight, I stole the master ledger from the Moretti vault. The ledger contains proof of every political bribe, every murder, and the genetic documentation proving the twins' true heritage. Your mother knew I was heading for your diner. She has eyes inside Carlo’s inner circle."
Nora held the small silver drive in her hand. It felt cold, heavy with the weight of dozens of ruined lives.
