Chapter 2 - The Third Floor

The third floor of the historic Grand Palatine Hotel was completely silent compared to the chaos echoing from the grand ballroom below.

Daniel led the way up the carpeted grand staircase, accompanied by two armed hotel security officers and Detective Miller of the city police department, who had been the first responder on the scene. Claire followed five paces behind, holding Noah’s small hand tightly in her own. She refused to let the boy out of her sight, ignoring Vanessa’s icy demands that Noah be kept in the manager’s lounge downstairs.

"Stay behind me, Claire," Daniel said, his voice tight as they reached the ornate double doors of Suite 302—the private executive office reserved for the Bennett family during large corporate functions.

The heavy oak door was slightly ajar.

A dark red trail of blood drops began near the threshold, leading out toward the hallway carpet where Noah had run minutes earlier.

Detective Miller drew his sidearm, holding up a gloved hand to stop Daniel. "Mr. Bennett, stay back. Let me clear the room first."

Miller pushed the door open with the tip of his boot.

The scent hit them instantly—a heavy, metallic copper smell mixed with the faint aroma of spilled scotch and expensive cigar smoke.

In the center of the room, behind a massive mahogany desk, lay Michael Bennett.

Michael was thirty-nine, the eldest son of the Bennett estate and co-CEO of Bennett Enterprises. He lay on his side against the Persian rug. His white formal shirt was soaked through with blood, centered around a severe, jagged puncture wound near his left shoulder collarbone. His face was gray, his eyes half-closed, his breathing coming in shallow, wet rattles.

"He’s alive!" Miller called out, holstering his weapon and dropping to his knees beside Michael. "Call the paramedics up here now! He's in severe hemorrhagic shock!"

Daniel rushed forward, dropping beside his older brother. "Michael! Michael, can you hear me?!"

Michael’s eyelids fluttered weakly. His blood-covered fingers twitched against the rug, reaching out blindly. He didn't look at Daniel. His glassy eyes moved past his brother, locking onto Claire and Noah standing in the doorway.

"Noah..." Michael choked out, a thin line of dark blood bubble-spilling from the corner of his mouth. "...safe... keep him... safe..."

"Don't talk, Mike," Daniel pleaded, taking his brother’s hand and pressing a desk towel hard against the shoulder wound to stanch the heavy bleeding. "The ambulance is coming. You’re going to be okay."

In the doorway, Noah squeezed Claire’s hand so tightly his knuckles turned white. He didn't look at his bleeding father; he kept his eyes fixed entirely on the polished surface of the mahogany desk.

Claire followed his gaze.

Sitting near the edge of the desk was an open, overturned crystal decanter of scotch. Beside it lay a broken heavy brass paperweight shaped like a ship’s anchor, its point smeared with wet blood. But next to the paperweight was something else—a small, key-operated wall safe set into the wood paneling behind the desk chair.

The safe door was hanging wide open.

Inside, the velvet-lined shelves were entirely empty.

"The ledger," Noah whispered softly, his voice trembling against Claire’s hip.

Claire knelt down beside him, keeping her voice low so the officers wouldn't overwhelm him. "What ledger, Noah?"

Noah leaned close to her ear, his eyes wide with fear. "Dad’s black book. He told Mom he was going to the police tonight. He told her... he was going to tell them about the money."

Before Claire could ask another question, two paramedics burst into the room with a trauma stretcher, shoving past the doorway. They immediately pushed Daniel back and began cutting away Michael’s shirt to apply pressure dressings and insert an IV line.

"Heart rate is one-forty and dropping!" the lead paramedic yelled. "We need to move him now! St. Jude Trauma Center!"

As the medics lifted Michael onto the gurney, Vanessa Bennett appeared in the doorway, escorted by a police officer. She looked at her husband’s pale, bloodied body on the stretcher, her face instantly twisting into a dramatic scream of pure agony.

"Michael! Oh my God, Michael!" Vanessa shrieked, clutching her chest and collapsing against the door frame. "Is he alive?! Please tell me he’s alive!"

Detective Miller stood up, wiping blood from his hands with a paper towel, his sharp eyes examining Vanessa’s reaction.

"He’s alive, Mrs. Bennett," Miller said flatly. "Barely. We need to clear this room immediately for forensic analysis."

Vanessa pushed past the officer, her eyes darting frantically toward the open safe behind the desk. When she saw the empty velvet interior, a microscopic flinch passed through her hands.

She turned her head toward Noah, who was hiding his face against Claire’s waist.

"Noah, come with Mommy now," Vanessa said, her voice dropping into a harsh, demanding hiss. "The police need to work. You're coming with me to the hospital."

"No," Claire said firmly, standing her ground and placing herself directly between Vanessa and the child. "He stays with me."

Vanessa’s eyes flashed with absolute hatred. "He is my son, Claire! You have no legal right to touch him!"

"He is a primary witness to an attempted homicide, Mrs. Bennett," Detective Miller interrupted calmly, stepping between the two women. "And given the child’s statement downstairs, until we determine exactly what transpired in this room, Child Protective Services and my department are placing Noah Bennett under temporary protective custody of his uncle, Daniel Bennett."

Vanessa stared at the detective, her jaw tightening until her teeth clicked. "This is absurd! You're taking the word of a confused, traumatized seven-year-old child over his mother?!"

May you like

"We are taking every precaution, ma'am," Miller replied cold-faced. "Officers, escort Mrs. Bennett downstairs."

As the officers guided Vanessa out into the hall, she turned her head back toward Claire. Her lips didn't move, but her dark green eyes delivered a message as clear as glass: This isn't over.
