Chapter 8 - The Confrontation

Before the formal arraignment hearing, Claire requested a ten-minute private meeting with Vanessa Bennett in the courthouse visitor facility.
Detective Miller initially resisted, but Claire insisted.
"I need to look her in the eye," Claire said. "Without her money, her security guards, or her legal team."
Ten minutes later, Claire walked into the sterile holding room.
Vanessa sat across the metal table in handcuffs, wearing a orange county jumpsuit. Her high blond twist was undone, her hair hanging in greasy strands around her face, her eyes sunken and bloodshot. She looked twenty years older than the glamorous woman who had walked into the wedding ballroom sixteen hours earlier.
She looked up as Claire sat down, a bitter, twisted smile touching her lips.
"Came to gloat, little bride?" Vanessa sneered, her voice raspy. "Enjoying your dramatic victory?"
"I didn't come to gloat, Vanessa," Claire said calmly, placing her hands flat on the table. "I came to tell you that Michael survived his surgery."
Vanessa’s expression flickered, a tiny flinch of defeat passing through her eyes before she masked it with anger. "He was always too stubborn to die."
"He woke up an hour ago," Claire continued smoothly. "The first thing he did was sign a complete surrender of parental rights to Daniel and me. We are taking legal guardianship of Noah."
Vanessa slammed her handcuffed wrists against the metal table, the steel chains rattling violently. "He is my son! You are nothing! You're a low-paid schoolteacher who married into this family for money!"
"I married Daniel because I love him," Claire said, her voice dropping into an unshakable, razor-sharp calm that instantly silenced Vanessa’s screaming. "And I am taking care of Noah because I love him. You never loved him, Vanessa. To you, Noah was just an asset—a tool to use for public sympathy when your crimes caught up with you."
Vanessa glared at her, her breathing heavy, but she found no words to answer.
"You called him broken," Claire said softly, leaning closer. "You told three hundred people he had 'episodes' to cover up the fact that he caught you stabbing his father. But Noah isn't broken, Vanessa. He was brave enough to save his father’s life. He was brave enough to keep the key. He is twice the person you will ever be."
Claire stood up from her chair, smoothing the front of her jacket.

"You will spend the rest of your life in a federal prison cell, Vanessa," Claire declared. "And Noah will grow up in a home filled with love, laughter, and truth, without ever hearing your name again."
Claire turned her back, signaled the guard, and walked out of the room, leaving Vanessa screaming curses against the reinforced steel door.
