Chapter 7 - The Ledger of Blood

At 7:00 AM, the rising sun broke through the grey rain clouds over downtown Seattle, casting a pale light over the federal courthouse building.

Inside a secure, windowless conference room on the eighth floor of the State Attorney General’s office, Daniel, Claire, and Noah sat around a massive oval table. Two senior state prosecutors and Detective Miller sat across from them, surrounded by evidence bags and recording equipment.

In the center of the table sat a heavy steel safety deposit box, retrieved an hour earlier from a private vault at First National Bank using the antique brass key Noah had carried in his sock.

Detective Miller used a pair of gloved hands to lift the lid of the box.

Inside lay a thick, leather-bound financial journal, alongside three encrypted USB flash drives and a stack of signed legal documents.

Miller opened the journal to the first page.

Column after column of hand-written entries detailed a decade-long embezzlement operation totaling over forty-two million dollars, stolen directly from the Bennett Charitable Foundation and various corporate supply logistics contracts.

Every transaction was accompanied by bank routing numbers, offshore shell company names, and certified copies of wire transfers.

"My God," Assistant State Attorney Howard whispered, flipping through the pages in absolute awe. "It’s all here. Every offshore account in the Grand Caymans, Zurich, and Liechtenstein."

"Look at the signatures," Daniel said, pointing a finger at the bottom of a twenty-million-dollar transfer authorization.

The signature belonged to Vanessa Bennett, alongside her co-conspirator: Arthur Vance, the chief financial officer of Bennett Enterprises.

"Daniel's name isn't on a single document," Claire noted, looking at the prosecutor. "Vanessa lied to intimidate us."

"Daniel is completely clean," Howard confirmed, looking at the young husband with deep relief. "Every authorization was executed exclusively by Vanessa and Vance. They were using fake corporate resolutions to bypass the board of directors."

Detective Miller closed the journal with a heavy thud. "This isn't just embezzlement anymore. With the attack on Michael and the two hitmen at your residential home, this is federal racketeering and attempted capital murder."

"Where is Vanessa right now?" Claire asked, her arm wrapped around Noah, who was drinking a cup of hot chocolate.

"She tried to board a private charter flight to Geneva from Boeing Field three hours ago," Miller smiled grimly. "State tactical officers picked her up at the hangar. She’s currently in a holding cell downstairs, waiting for her formal arraignment."

Noah looked up at Claire, his small face brightened by a faint, hopeful smile for the first time in twenty-four hours. "Is Mom... is she never coming back?"

Claire touched his hair softly. "She won't ever hurt you or your dad again, Noah. I promise you."
